Guatapé and El Peñol, Colombia
Guatapé is a colourful little town in Antioquia. It is located about 2 hours east of Medellin. Guatapé is particularly known by the El Peñón de Guatapé (also known as El Peñol) situated in front of it, a rock about 200 meters high. The peak is reached by over 649 steps and probably originated more than 70 million years ago. The locals are still not sure how this stone originated. There are also rumours that a giant placed this stone there.... From the top you can enjoy an unbelievable view over the surrounding countryside. Apparently the best view in the world, at least that's what the sign at the bottom of the rock says.
From El Peñol you can take one of the many Moto-Ratones to Guatapé. The journey takes only a few minutes. The landscape around Guatapé is characterised by a large reservoir. This was created by flooding the valley and serves to produce electricity. We were on one of the big ships. An approx. 80 minute round trip on the reservoir. It was the same ship that sank 3 months later, as there were too many tourists on the ship. (you may have read the news)
Many paisas (people from Antioquia) are attracted to one of the many fincas around the lake, especially during extended weeks. Usually the whole family travels to spend a few days out of town.
