To speak of this novel is to touch a deep subject, being the second novel that incursionó of this famous author made me more bearable that On heroes and tombs. Maybe it's due to how short it is and the link I received from the protagonist.

Ernesto Sabato is an argentine writer, famous for writing The tunnel, On Heroes and Tombs and The Angel of Darkness. Outstanding in the field of physics, as well as worked as an essayist and painter. He was also awarded the Miguel Cervantes Prize.

Although he began his brilliant career as a physicist, almost reaching old age he completely changed his field to literature. No matter that he had published three novels, all three were highly acclaimed at the time.

What it's about

Juan Pablo Castel introduces us to his life by telling us that he murdered the only woman he had ever loved. With this abrupt beginning there is no turning back, we begin to delve into history, seeking in Juan's thoughts the justification that led him to make such a bloody decision.

Message

The novel is short and can be read in a day, but has a very strong psychological burden. The protagonist Juan is too distrustful of people, carrying inside his head tangled thoughts that border on the systematic, even paranoid.

The character reflects the adjacent insecurities in the human being. One sees much reflected in the phrases or reflections of the protagonist. The values that they transmit to us are the tunnel that each one of us takes when we intuit the first lie, or falsehood in the people; losing the confidence and being able to grow by each lie that is being deposited in us.

Opinion as writer

As it is written in the first person, the psychological load of the character is the most relevant thing in the narrative. Everywhere you can smell the dubious conjectures and the logic that Juan forcibly weaves. It is interesting to immerse oneself in the mind of the character, it is almost like seeing oneself.

At no time does history bore you. The appetite to discover Juan's advances leads us to continue reading the novel and know the key point of the hypotheses are true. These facts play an important factor.

Juan's thoughts also give him the humanity that a reader is looking for, they perfectly shape a distrustful and aggressive person. Several critics give their approval as a psychological reference for expressing with certainty the loneliness, madness and fury of the character.
