Photohistory: La Concordia Square, Caracas Venezuela

La Concordia Square is located in the central area of ​​the city of Caracas in Venezuela. This square is built in the place that occupied the old prison La Rotunda. this prison was the main symbol of the political repression of the dictatorship of General Juan Vicente Gomez who ruled from 1908 to 1935. In 1936 after the death of the dictator the prison was demolished by order of President Eleazar Lopez Contreras and commissioned the famous architect Carlos Raul Villanueva for its design and construction.
The original design had a Greek-style neoclassical temple (photo above) which was demolished years later and replaced by a four-faced obelisk (is visible in the following photo). This work of renovation was commissioned in 1961 to the architect Eduardo Robles Piquer and the engineer Tomas Reinae construction began in 1937 and culmiThnated in 1940.
La Concordia Square was thought of as a symbolic place for Venezuelan society. The fact of being built in the same land where many citizens suffered and died at the hands of one of the most atrocious dictatorships in our history, makes it serve as an example and historical reminder to draw attention to what happened there, so that dark chapter of our History will not be repeated
