The Great Martian War

in #english5 years ago

Hello, beloved Steemians:

Today I show you a critic about the 2013 mockcumentary "The Great Martian War 1913-1917". Produced by Michael Kot, Steve Maher, and Mike Slee and narrated by Mark Strong, it was made to look like a History Channel real programme. Relates the develop of the Martian War. The First World War events were interlaced with the plot of H. G. Wells War of the Worlds". The producers edited real footage –digitally altered- and new footage aged to make it look shot by the time the actual war was on.
The interviews to the survivors, all of them civilians, soldiers and medical personnel, imitate perfectly those face-to-face conversations that 1980´s and 1990´s broadcasters had with real people who witnessed and/or took part in the First and Second World Wars.

Invasion

As we know, the First World War started after the assassination of the Dutch Franz Ferdinand and his wife, the rulers of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire by German anarchists. Until that part of the Mockumentary, the events run as the actual historical facts. The twist, which really got me obsessed with this programme, was that the German government had to request for help to its enemies because they were under attack by some outer world antagonists.
We found now that Germany and its allies had to join efforts with United Kingdom and its allies to defeat three different types or “models” of extra-terrestrial species or machines that can´t be destroyed by the weapons of that time. The High Commands maniobres to strike the alien army turned out to be a failure when they find out that all their weapons, munitions and even some parts of the regular uniforms were taken by the Martians to feed themselves and built their army to conquer the rest of the earth surface. All the soldiers who were sent to the front laid dead in the mud. The British War Office named them “The Vanished”. The people in Great Britain were indignated by the report. A whole new generation was sent to its death.
This feeling only grew when they realised the aliens wanted the human weaponry to built they own machines.

In real life, we can find the Beaumont Battle, the Verdun battle and the Somme Battle. They were considered futile because the British Army made no advance but several lives were lost in the Trench Warfare in the Western front. These casualties in the British Army injured people´s moral. Some well-known authors, such as J.R.R. Tolkien, Saki (whose real name was Hector Hugh Munro) and Bruce Marshall were sent to war. Tolkien´s close friends died in the previous referred battle and he suffered the sequels of those experiences for life. Such memories were the basis of the adventures in his books about the Middle Earth.Bruce Marshall. His 1962 book, The Girl from Lubeck, is set in the Cold War Europe with Versory, the main character, having conferences throughout a damaged Germany, close to be divided by the famous Berlin Wall. Unfortunately, not everybody could exorcize the ghosts of war in a productive way. The English author Saki, born in Birmany in 1870, wasn´t lucky: he was reached by a projectile and died immediately.

Winter Wonders

The American President by that time Woodrow Wilson tried to keep his country far from the bloodshed, convinced that the less part they take in that conflict the least injured America will be. He changed his mind in 1913 winter. The U.S. Government sent supplies to the U.K. to help them resist the Martian attack. An astronomic event was seen in the skies: a strange star shone intensively before it fell and struck the Northern Sea waters. The following morning, all the American supply ships were sunk by underwater Martian Monsters. As a reaction, Wilson quitted the American Chair and Theodore Roosevelt gathered support to join the war.
The real life actions ran similarly: Wilson tried to keep his nation out of war but gave the U.K. support by sending ships with supplies. The German Army sent an Ultimatum in which set that all the ships in their way to Great Britain would be considered as targets. A commercial ship, the R.M.S. Lusitania, carrying civilian passengers, was thought to be taking war supplies to the British. The U-boote crisis kept the British Isles in siege. So, following that presumption –which we´ll never know if it was correct or just a rumour-, the German Navy hit the Lusitania and the U.S. joined war. In the mockumentary, the U-boote were substituted by underwater Martian Monsters and the name of the Commercial ship was changed to R.M.S. Aquitania.

The Lost Legacy

Before talking about this subtitle, I got to confess that the reason why I saw this programme is that, when the narrator said "cracking the Martian code" I thought of Alberti, Viète, Bacon and some other people I won´t mention because the list would be too long. The notebook in which were the alien language was written also took me to my early childhood when I saw the 2001 Disney film Atlantis: The Lost Empire. Milo Tacht inherited an ancient book from his oncle. It was written by a religiuos man who discovered the lost civilization of Atlantis and wrote it to help peole to find it. A clear resemblance to Arne Saknussem in Journey to the centre of Earth by Jules Verne.

Lawrence Hart, a Historian specialised on the Martian War, cracked the code and read the message found in the egret that attacked London. The Aliens travelled to earth and tried to colonise it because their own planet was invaded by a living creature they couldn´t defeat. The alien that drove the egret was trying to deliver a message to warn humans about the specie that invaded their own planet.

Operation Trojan Horse

In H. G. Wells story, the Martians die after a few hours because their bodies can´t metabolize the oxigen in our planet. In documentaries as Cosmos, we learnt that Earth lies in an area called The Goldilocks Zone, in reference to the childish story about the girl who chose the baby bear´s bed because his parents´s were too hard or too soft. In this context, the orbit in we are living in is perfect: not too close to the sun to get burnt or too far to get frozen.
In some other film works, such as The Independence Day, aliens were defeated by inserting an informatic virus that disabled the system of their shuttles. In The Great Martian War, the allies discovered an animal virus called Glanders found in horses, that can kill the outer world invaders in a matter of seconds. So, they produced the virus in mass quantities and sent hurts of horses to the front line. They kept in mind that doing this could affect their soldiers and the little civilians left in that area and create a world wide pandemy.
