The raven and its meanings in tattoos
Hello friends of steemit in this opportunity I want to share the meaning of a tattoo quite peculiar and very interesting and it is the tattoo of the crow I hope you enjoy it
Ravens and humans have coexisted through thousands of years, it can be said that this is a bird that has known how to adapt perfectly living close to human beings.
One of the main characteristics of this bird is that it is a completely omnivorous animal (that they eat meat or plants)
In many regions of the world these are considered a pest because of their abundance due to the fact that they usually attack crops, and part of the crops usually feed on dead animals, carrion and small fruits.
These are highly intelligent animals, and over the years they have gained certain fame or a kind of reputation that has made them acquire diverse meanings.
In Celtic symbolism, the tattoo of a crow is closely related to the battles and the Celtic goddess of war and destruction (Morrigan).
It is said that these birds were the first totems of this Celtic goddess, it was also said that one of the attributes of this goddess was the power to become a crow, This form was used to make the balance in the battles that were fought in their fields
This one is represented with armor and also with weapons, it was present in all the wars and its role in them was to instill in the soldiers the strength to continue fighting
It was also believed that this same goddess represented the renewal, the death that could give birth to a new life, love, and sexual desire, This is why some people seek to reflect on their crow tattoos a symbol that represents the renewal associated with light and life.
It is also said that in Norse mythology there were two ravens that always accompanied the God Odin, which had by name Hugin and Munin
this pair of crows served the orders of Odin, and they were responsible for traveling around the world collecting information, notices, that after sundown they were going to take him to the god Odin.
Hugin represented the power of thought and Munin represented memory and intuition, every time the sun came out they were both sent to earth in search of information, and every night at sundown they would go back to Odin's palace and whisper to him all the news and events that they had heard about on their visit to planet earth.
This association with the God Odin and the crow for the Nordics came to be used in many ways, one of them in the armor and the war shield, as a symbol to invoke victory and to be favored by the god Odin
On the other hand in ancient Greece these birds were considered synonymous with bad omen because there were several legends about them, However, in the general population it was said that it was a bad omen for a crow to fly over your house, to fly over where someone was, or to stand on the roof of a house, because this meant that some sorrow was approaching the house, or that a relative was going to die.
In Christianity the raven's fame did not help either, because of the story told in the Bible, where Noe after the flood sent the raven and a pigeon to check if the flood had gone down and find dry land after the flood abated, but only the pigeon returned, and the crow failed in the mission, this turned the dove into a universal symbol of peace, a symbol related to God, and the crow was punished by turning its white feathers in black according to the scriptures
But in the Eastern civilizations the crows were seen as the guardians of the lost souls, these were responsible for bringing the lost souls to the world of the dead, this characteristic or way of seeing the crows as someone who can take one soul from this world to the other, as someone who can bring news to a God, or as someone who can create a link between this and the other world, is something that is permanent in all civilizations that have made this bird a symbol
In many legends of the American Indian peoples, the crow was considered a hero to many tribes, One of them was the Inuit, they believed that the crow had deceived a gigantic sea monster that today is forming with its body the peninsula of Alaska
On the other hand in the American tribes Hopi, Navajo, and Zuni, it was believed that the crow had flown from the bottom of the universe, from the darkest, and that they had brought the sunlight to our planet
This is why the crow is considered a bird of creation, because without their act human beings would still live in darkness, this is why this bird is important to Native Americans because it reflects the symbol of sunrise, the symbol of understanding, and it is a living being that risked to bring a benefit to human beings, because of this for them it is a venerated bird, with powers that benefit the community humanity
Although at present one still thinks badly of this animal, This was very respected in the ancient world by many civilizations for powers of healing, wisdom, and above all gratitude and empathy for all its associates
In the world of tattoos this can represent many things both positive and negative and it is up to you to decide what is going to reflect on your tattoo
Some of the most common meanings of this symbol are
- Intelligence and cunning
- The Deception
- Omens of misfortune and bad luck
- Creation and birth
- The Forecast
- A Messenger of the Gods
- Healing and medicine
- Provision and Light
I hope you liked it
