A little about Seals

in #english8 years ago

 Hi, it's me again, Pedro

I will tell you a little about the wonderful Seals:

Seals are marine  mammals that are adapted to live most of the time in the water, their  classification is a large family of mammals "Pinnipeds" which is divided  into 3 families that are:

  1.  Odobénidos (Walruses)
  2. Fócidos (Seals)
  3. Otáridos (Bears and Sea Lions)

Most confuse the Seals  with the Sea Wolves, but they differ in two basic things, the Seals do  not have ears and it costs to them to walk in the earth. There  are several types of seals and some very rare such as the Seal of  Helmet, we also have the marine elephant that is also a type of seal  which is the biggest one.

Seals most of the time  are spent hunting in the water, some species can be submerged up to 2  hours because they can store oxygen in their blood and their muscles. A  study has shown that the heart of a sea elephant can fall from 112  beats per minute to only 20 or 50 beats per minute while submerged. They use this ability also to sleep which can be confused by dead seals since it seems that they do not breathe.

You can be found in  almost all the seas, from the cold waters of the poles to the tropical  waters, this brings problems to them since this is easier to be devoured  by the great predators, orcas, sharks and polar bears eat them. For that reason they prefer to sleep on land, are very intelligent and easy to train. There  have been reports of humans bitten by seals but it is because of their  natural instinct to protect themselves and theirs, so let him come to  you first. Seals are victims of commercial hunting in Canada. Her skin is used in the fashion industry. Apart from that, the seals are hunted for their oil and their skin. Contamination from oil spills adversely affects the survival of seals. If they reach adulthood, seals can live up to 30 years. So do not annoy them !!

 Curiosities:

  •  The seals spend much of their life in the water, but they mate, give birth to babies and take care of them on the shore. Skin protection and thick grease protect them against freezing temperatures.
  •  Seals produce milk with 50% fat. Their babies gain from 3 to 5 pounds daily thanks to milk.
  •  The largest seals that exist are the southern elephant seals that can reach 13 feet long and weigh up to 2 tons.
  •  They can dive from 1000 to 1300 feet deep when they are looking for food. They normally feed on squid and fish.
  •  Las focas tienen bigotes que les ayudan a detectar la vibración de la presa bajo el agua.

So far this summary about the Seals I hope has helped them!
