Asphalting Work Method

Asphalt Concrete (Hotmix) is a mixture of coarse aggregates, fine aggregates, and fillers (Filler) with asphalt binder in high temperature (hot) conditions with compositions studied and regulated by technical specifications.

The hot asphalt mixture is a flexible pavement mixture comprising coarse aggregate, fine aggregate, filler, and asphalt binder with certain comparisons and mixed in hot conditions. In Indonesia, hot asphalt mixture types commonly used include:

Asphalt Concrete, Hot RoIIed Sheet (HRS), and Split Mastic Asphalt (SMA). Many experiments have been done by adding additional materials to improve pavement quality. The literature study on the addition of additional materials has an effect on the characteristics of each type of hot asphalt mixture.

After all the hotmix asphalt material has fulfilled the requirements, the mixing process must also fulfill the prescribed procedure. Furthermore, the asphalting work can begin.

The stages of the asphalting job implementation are summarized as follows:

A. Preparation
In the preparation stage, necessary equipment and equipment must be ready, ie engine powered paver, dispersion equipment, compactor and finishing tools. In addition, prior to commencement of the work, the contractor must clear all job sites of all kinds of garbage or disruptive waste. Cleaning of the field remains done during the work until the job is done.

B. Field Preparation

1. Location setup
Site measurements referring to the working drawings need to be carried out prior to the discharge of the asphalt, under the supervision of the supervisory consultant. Demolition is done by forming a rectangle with sides that are perpendicular and flat. Then the discharged old asphalt is transported out and thrown in place. Exhaust must be clean from loose material and dirt.

2. Installation of asphalt
Asphalt can be applied to a surface that can be a top foundation (new asphalt) or on the old asphalt (road repair). Asphalt installation process must be approved by field supervisor.

3. Asphalt spread / spread
The spread of asphalt can be done by heavy equipment or human. The use of machines can speed up the work, while using human labor is more cost effective. If using a paver, then the paver must operate at a speed that does not cause cracks on surfaces, shreds or other irregularities in the surface. The extent of the dispersal should be as agreed by the Field Supervisor meeting the thickness of the plan.

4. Asphalting
As soon as the asphalt is dispersed, then the surface that has been formed should be checked immediately and examined whether there is a bad quality so that it can be repaired

immediately. Compaction is done when the hotmix attached asphalt temperature reaches 110 ° C and must be finished before the temperature drops below 65 ° C. The reprocessing process is repeated at least three times. The initial and final rinsing is done by a steel roller machine, while the rolling between using a pneumatic bass roller machine.

5. Finishing
In the final stages, hotmix asphalt surfaces that have been compacted must be waited for to cool thoroughly before heavy equipment can be placed on top of them. If any part of the surface is detached or destroyed, it must be immediately compacted on the instructions of the field supervisor. The final shape of the hotmix asphalt layer should be smooth and flat, if any excess should be cut straight and neat.

Only by bagging a construction service business license is not enough for a contractor to be able to say in his job, for example in the job of paving. A professional contractor shall comply with all technical requirements of asphalting work, and pass through the phases by appropriate procedures.
