Why Dental Emergencies cannot wait - Shay Markovitch, DDS

The unfortunate thing about dental emergencies is that they happen when you least expect them.Even more unfortunate is the fact that they occur at the most inopportune times. Like weddings, the day before or when you are about to fly somewhere special.

The issue is that delaying emergency dental treatment can prove to be even more costly. Delaying a dental injury or toothache can often be more costly in the long run. Unfortunately it can also damage your teeth, gums, neighboring teeth and even cause damage to the bone.

The unfortunate fact is that pain rarely recovers on it’s own due to the underlying issue.

If you have a dental emergency then the best thing that you can do is get the emergency seen straight away. The dentist will evaluate the severity of the dental issue and make sure that if possible you can save the tooth that is causing the issue. By addressing the issue quickly you could be saving the tooth and preventing neighboring teeth from being damaged.

Tooth Pain - what is the cause

Any tooth pain that you are experiencing and increases over a short amount of time is almost likely due to decay. This will have spread to the pulp and caused an infection. The result is that you will require root canal therapy. This is normally done to preserve the tooth. The treatment will remove the decayed pulp and infection and will restore the inner structure of your tooth by packing it with gutta percha. On top of the damaged tooth a crown is placed to restore the look of the previous tooth.

**A knocked out tooth **
This must be attended to within 30 minutes for the chance of a successful reimplantation. Even in the case of a partially dislodged tooth, it will typically require an extraction before any attempt at re-implanting the tooth is made.

Why dental emergencies must be attended to quickly.

The price for ignoring your dental emergency could be high, both for your smile and wallet. If you leave it untreated, it iis likely to lead to increased pain and cause additional damage to your adjacent structures.

Dr Markovitch advocates treating all dental emergencies immediately. This will insure that infection be prevented from causing more damage and your tooth may be saved.
