According to the new study, the smuggling activity put so much pressure on the elephant population in Mozambique that it started to affect evolution. Historically, only 2 to 4 percent of female African elephants are congenitally toothless; now about a third of the population is in this state.

This case demonstrates the cruelty of poaching; but this is also a rigid example of the fact that the pressure on an ecosystem could lead to incredible adaptations from the evolutionary point of view.
