Negative Space Watercolor Painting
Hi everyone, this is one of the watercolor technique that I recently discovered and I want to share this with you through this tutorial blog.
First of all, what is Negative Space ?
Negative Space is the space around the main image or subject. It's like the background of the subject alone.
What is Negative Space Painting?
Negative Space Painting is a process whereas you paint the negative space instead of the subject. Thus, it makes the image or painting to have a lighter subject and a darker background because you are constantly painting the negative space over and over until you produce your picture or image.
So let's start
What do we need?
In this tutorial, we will need the following:
- Watercolor
- Paintbrush (preferrably a pointed brush )
- watercolorpaper
- water
Prepare the said materials up above and create your own pallete
In this sample I used bluish and greenish pallete
This is the first step, you might want to draw outlines of your choice of image before applying watercolor.
Paint the negative space thouroughly and make sure to leave space for your subject, like the image below:
I used coral-succulent design here
Let it dry, and then add another layer. Make sure that you won't paint over the white area, add another layer of image by painting the negative space of the second layer.
Do the first and second process until you are satisfied with your layers.
In the third layer I used green
Again, make sure that each layer is already dry when you add the next one. This is to paint a solid shape. But if you want another technique or style, you are free to explore.
Make sure to avoid the spaces on the frontmost or the lightest parts.
See that adding layers actually adds depth to your painting as the layered parts darken usually.
This is the last layer I created.
Now it's your choice if you want to add some details.
