The Egyptian agricultural new year started with heliacal rising of Star Sirius coincidentally followed with the inundation of the Nile bringing the fertile red mud into the valley, replenishing the fields and irrigation systems.

Ancient Egyptians identified Sirius with the Virgin Mother Goddess Isis, as Sopdet, while the Orion constellation as her consort God of the Dead, Death, Life, and Rebirth Osiris, whose belt containing the three stars points to where star Sirius will make an appearance along with the rising sun signaling the start of Egyptian new year, September 11.

Wikipedia: Sopdet is the ancient Egyptian name of the star Sirius and its personification as an Egyptian goddess. Known to the Greeks as Sothis, she was conflated with Isis as a goddess and Anubis as a god.

The heliacal rising or star rise of a star occurs annually, or the similar phenomenon of a planet, when it first becomes visible above the eastern horizon at dawn just before sunrise (thus becoming "the morning star") after a complete orbit of the earth around the sun.

Historically, the most important such rising is that of Sirius, which was an important feature of the Egyptian calendar and astronomical development. The rising of the Pleiades heralded the start of the Ancient Greek sailing season, using celestial navigation.
