Flags of the World #6 : Antigua and Barbuda!

Hello followers and fellow Steemians welcome to the review of the flag of Antigua and Barbuda! This is the 6th flag i'll be covering on my series to cover most of the flags of the world! I hope you enjoy the ride and maybe just maybe, you can also start to like flags a lot just like me! I'm trying hard to get people from other vexillology communities into steemit but no success so far! Guess i'll just have to keep on trying!

Today's Flag is the Flag of Antigua and Barbuda!

Flag of Antigua and Barbuda

This flag was adopted shortly after Antigua and Barbuda achieved self-governance on February of 1967. Antigua and Barbuda had been a British colony since 1632!. The flag was adopted to mark this achievement and a contest was held were more than 600 people participated! The winner of the contest was a high school teacher named Reginal Samuel.

The design of the flag is a red background with an upside down pyramid emblem in the middle. The pyramid is divided in three colors with a sun in the top part of the pyramid.

Meanings

The red color represents the energy and life on the people inhabiting the islands.

The black represents the African ancestry of the people in the island, since most of the people today are descendants of slaves brought into the Americas in the African slave trade era.

The blue represents hope and when combined with the white color and the sun it also represents the Caribbean sea and sand.

The sun is meant to represent the new era that started for the people of the island when the nation got its independence from the UK. The creator of the flag Sir Reginald Samuels said he was inspired to create a flag that reflected the nation's past but embraced the new era for the future!

Colonial Flags

Before its independence Antigua and Barbuda had flags similar to those used by other colonies of the UK like Australia or New Zealand.

I'm always oddly curious of flags with Sun references on them... hmmmm. Thank you for sharing, I have learned something new.

Awesome post and some awesome stuff about the flag and the country. I loved your description of it. It filled me with interest and made me think about their sense of identity. The flag itself and the way it was chosen are filled with deep creative beauty.

I have to go against @stahlberg in this. The way the red opens like a curtain for us to see the way they see themselves. It's right behind the cover, clear as air, creating contrasts and dissonances to fight against first impressions, against the mind's comfort zone that leads to prejudice.

That's a nice destination for vacations... I should now, I spent a good portion of my copywriting years selling trips there :D

Cheers

I've learned something today. The present flag fits and describes the flag perfectly.

In this flag design I saw a blond woman in a white and blue swimsuit, with sunburned skin, lying on a beach tanning herself... once I saw it I couldn't unsee it... sorry I'm an artist and visual associations are important to me... :) I think they should probably change their flag, from a pure design viewpoint it's quite ugly, and the 5 different strong colors are not helping. Just imho

Yeah, it might not be the best flag around but its not the worst! believe me... At least they get some points for creativity :-P

Good post, task complete
