How to stop judging and think from someone else's circumstances?

in #education8 years ago

What if, what if we assume circumstances and not judging characteristics? We will be full of blessings, forgiveness and compassion. Anger and frustration will not take over us.

Here's a very common story in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Krishna was driving on Federal Highway, near to Bangsar South exit. On his right eye corner, a red Honda City slipped in. Krishna was few inches away from hitting that red Honda City. Krishna cursed at the Honda City's driver, "What the fuck!? He is an asshole!!! No brain!"
The Honda City continue to cut into the left lane, then right, then right again. Krishna saw he accelerated out of his sight. He is still pissed off.

Krishna assumes the Honda City driver is an asshole and brainless person, because he almost banged the Honda City due to that driver's fault. The thought of Krishna might be at fault never crossed his mind.

Now let's look at the Honda City driver's point of view.

Shin was driving on Federal Highway, near Bangsar South exit. He was late to hospital for his wife's delivery. He was frantic, anxious and scared. He saw a small opening in between 2 cars, and slipped in front of a Mercedes S-Class. He wants to reach the hospital at the next minute, so he cuts into the left lane, then right, then right again. Then, accelerates at 150km/h.

Now, do you think it is legal for Shin to act this way? Logically speaking, it is illegal because he has exceeded the speed limit and endangering other driver's lives.

Another question, do you think it is reasonable? Maybe yes, maybe no.
Another question, do you think Shin is rational enough to think and act? No. And what made him irrational? His current circumstances.

This is a very simple analogy of what happened in the capital city of Kuala Lumpur. Let's turn it around.

What do you think would have happened if Krishna assumed Shin's circumstances and looked within himself?

Krishna thought "Oh, he must be rushing for something important. I hope he is okay and whoever or whatever he is rushing for, is okay too."

Does Krishna knew about Shin's circumstances? Unless he is an esper, he wouldn't know. But does it matter? Krishna is blessing Shin and his beloved one, and he wasn't angry. He is showing compassion, a positive energy. It does not matter if Shin is actually rushing for anything. What matters is Krishna looked within him, forgiven Shin and blessed Shin.

Now let's swap Krishna and Shin. Most likely, Shin will think alike as Krishna, and vice versa.

What does this mean to us?

When we are not in those circumstances, we assume characteristics. When we are in those circumstances, we justify ourselves using circumstances, not characteristics. In short, this is Fundamental Attribution Error (FAE) in social psychology.

In simple terms, FAE is the tendency to believe that what people do reflects who they are.

What if, what if we assume circumstances and not judging characteristics? We will be full of blessings, forgiveness and compassion. Anger and frustration will not take over us.

When you encounter someone who has done something that ticked you off, assume they have circumstances that caused them doing so. Bless and forgive them, and you'll realize you are blessing and forgiving yourself.
