HOMESCHOOLING ROCKS: MYTHS ABOUT SCHOOL EDUCATION

in #education6 years ago (edited)

Now school is a common place for education but in the past all people who had financial opportunity educated children at home. Today this tradition is almost lost, but it's being reborn actively the recent years.

Why did our ancestors educate their kids at home without a doubt? Why was it consiredered to be the best, and why is it considered to be strange and wrong now??

So when parents have a need to work and earn (both of them), then it's another side of a problem, we don't touch it now. But I know dozens of families with good income and a mom who doesn't work at all, but their kids go to school. Why and for what?

A school now is treated like a storage, where parents can give their kids with a safe thought they need to do it and they must do it, education, communication and blabla.

But what if we look at this phenomenon deeper?

Let's think about common school myths and arguments which I hear when I talk to people about homeschooling.

Myth 1: the school teaches (gives the child knowledge, education).

Modern urban children go to school, already knowing how to read, write and count. No other knowledge acquired in school is used in adult life. The school program consists of an unsystematic set of facts for memorization. Why should they be remembered? Yandex will answer any questions much better. Those of the children who choose the appropriate specialization will study physics or chemistry anew. The rest after leaving school can not remember what they were taught all these dreary years.

The school program has not changed for many decades,  the school does not give the child any truly useful knowledge and skills for further success in adulthood. Even if we assume that it is this set of facts for memorizing a school subject that a child really needs, it can be given ten times faster.

In general, this is a very strange system, when a thousand hours are stretched for several years ... Already at the institute each subject is given larger blocks in six months or a year. And a very strange method of teaching, when children are forced to sit and listen without a movement ...

The experience of numerous parents of applicants shows that several years of study of the subject - over a thousand hours in school plus homework - do not help the student to know the subject in an amount sufficient to enter a good university. In the last two school years, a tutor is hired and re-educates the child on this subject - usually one hundred hours is enough to be among the best in the class.

Myth 2: the school is needed for the socialization of the child

socialization is the process of internalizing the norms and ideologies of society. (wikipedia)

So to be successful we need to be socialized. Maybe.

So who are successful people?

  • As a rule, held professionals who earn much money.
  • These people are primarily distinguished by the ability to achieve their goals.
  • Speed of thinking.
  •  Ability to act.
  • Activity.
  •  Strength of will.
  • Perseverance.
  • And, as a rule, they make a lot of efforts before achieving the result. They are able not to leave things halfway. Excellent communication skills - negotiations, sales, public speaking, effective social ties.
  • The ability to make instant decisions and make them immediately.
  • Stress resistance.
  • Fast qualitative work with information.
  •  Ability to concentrate on one, dropping everything else.
  • Observation.
  • Intuition.

Does school teach It???????

I'd rather say, it's all on the contrary....

All the years of the school, it is obvious that there is no sincere enthusiasm - even if the student has passion to a couple of subjects, he can not choose only them and refuse from all the rest. They can become only a hobby for the time after school!

Achieving the result is not taught to be an important thing either - the bell rang, and you have to give up what you did not finish, and go to the next lesson. SO All 11 years  children are taught that the result is not needed and it is not important. Any case must be thrown halfway because of the next one!

Speed of thinking has nothing to do with school, because a teacher will pay attention to all the pupils in the class and choose speed appropriate for the majority, so relly clever pupils are boring during the lessons, they can study all the subjects 2 times faster and finish the programme for 6-7 years not for 11.

Quality work with information is never taught at school because teachers aren't interested in the methods of your studying the material, you need to cover the topic and get a mark - that's it, how many hours you will spend for it - your own problem. Only now I discover many interesting ways of memorizing and understanding complicated themes but at school we were taught just to learn them by heart, no matter they are hard or not.

Responsibility for the choice? But pupils at school have no choice ...

Development of intuition and sensitivity? Leadership skills? Ability to act? They are not included in the program ...

Instead of internal reference, children develop emotional dependence on the prejudiced opinion of others. The child has no right to express his own opinion.

Is a class a model of a society? It is NOT so.

I personally do not live in a world where all people are of the same age ... Where they do not have common interests ... Where I have to submit to a teacher who waits the end of the lesson even more than kids... Where I must finish all my tasks in 45 minutes even if they are not finished... Maybe you live?

Analyzing my school years, I really see nothing useful that I couldn't receive at home. Moreover I see many negative sides, which prevented my successful education.

Time is different now, and today we have a choice, and we can make a right one.

Only a pleasure, I hope more Steemians get to read your good educational post =)

Great job explaining everything. Best option for children would be to learn at home using different methods to teach them all they need for successful life. Thanks for shearing.

Education today is about being around for the right information, there is a constant change at all levels but with information it's like twice faster of which if you couldn't catch the wave of right information it might be dangerous.
