Bring Back the Books - Why Reading is a Must Do for Young Minds

in #education7 years ago

It should not surprise any educator that reading is good. It not only occupies a student's time productively but also sets the foundation for lifelong learning, development of IQ and intelligence well as the ability to engage in rhetoric and logic.
It enables us to create other worlds and enter into that other world and enjoy them.

While it is true that there has been a resurgence in reading due to the advent of electronic and digital books, the old paperback is still as necessary as ever in education and recreation.

There is something about being able to actually hold the book and turn the pages, to ponder on the word language and ideas that a book gives.

And while I'm sure that to some degree, a digital book can some of those things, I'm not convinced that it can do them all.
I read somewhere recently that 88% of those who do read digital books read printed and paper backs as well.

Books stimulate the intelligence of the brain. They increases intelligence.

Dr. Seuss once wrote that “The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go.”

It's true. It's always been true. You are what you eat and your ability to consume well-written literature position in this world to learn and grow and discover more and more.

A simple children's book will expose the average child to over 50% more language there any television program you can mention. In fact, according to research from the University of California being exposed to a new vocabulary leads to better scores on reading test - no surprise there - but also better scores on the general test regarding intelligence.

Reading from an iPad or off any tablet screen is better than nothing. However, there is some research which would seem to suggest that reading speeds on-screen are actually lowered by up to 30%.

In the same way that exercising your arms and legs produces strength and stamina so to ploughing through  well-written books stimulates the strength of the mind.

It makes us a little more sensitive to the circumstances and people around us. This is in stark contrast to what visual media tends to do, which is isolated and decrease empathy.

Unlike television, somehow reading is actually able to make us more sympathetic to the complexity of relationships around it.It uses greater insight into human community and socialisation.

There is also evidence to suggest that the paperback has a greater ability to engage the long term memory more than electronic reading devices and that paperbacks provide a superior understanding and comprehension to their digital cousins.
Reading can help you relax; It can help you unwind and destress at the end of the day.

It's no surprise that the majority of readers do so in bed.

I have always encouraged my children to read.I have four children, and all of them are under ten years of age.

Reading in the afternoon, reading in bed at night, reading after breakfast in the morning: All these things are encouraged in our home, and we reap the rewards every day.

Our children tend to be relaxed and easygoing and have not been exposed to much of the visual trauma that creates stress (I am thinking TV and video games).

Bring back books. And if you have them keep reading them. Introduce your children to high-quality literature. Nevermind the simplistic I'm off and childish storytelling of today.

There are beautiful works of literature which can captivate a child's mind, give them a sense of empathy and understanding as well as increase their attention span and their ability to master a host of other subjects in life.
