How to make a VENN Diagram in Participatory Rural Appraisal

Understanding and purpose
Venn diagrams are a useful technique for seeing public relations with institutions in the village (and the environment).
The venn diagram is a tool in facilitating community discussions to identify what institution are in the village, as well as analyzing and assessing its role, its importance to society and benefits to society.
Institutions reviewed include local institutions, government agencies and private institutions (including Non-Governmental Organizations). Venn diagrams can be very general or topical about certain institutions only, for example whose activities are related to agricultural extension only, or health only.
How to make Venn Diagram
Venn diagrams can be made on paper or on the ground. Often used paper cut in a circle with markers.

Some Stages to be done in facilitating the creation of Venn Diagrams:
- Discuss with participants, any institution in the village
- Record the list of institution on a paper
- Cut a circle of paper that reads Society.
- Agree the symbol to be used for example;
- The magnitude of the circle shows the importance of these institutions according to the understanding of the participating community, the more important an institution the greater the circle
- Much closer Distance from community level: shows the benefit of the institution according to the community's understanding. The closer to the community circle the institution becomes more useful.
- Discuss whether the institutions are 'important' in the community's sense and agree on the magnitude of the circle representing the institution
- Cut out large circular papers according to the agreement, write the name of the institution to the circle
- Discuss how the institution's benefits to the community are organized by the distance from the community circle

To note the importance of an institution to society (shown by the size of the circle) is not necessarily perceived benefits by society (as indicated by the distance from the circle of society)
- If all institutions have been placed, re-examine and discuss the truth of the information
- Make changes if necessary
- Discuss issues and potential of each institution
- Summarizes what is discussed in the recording discussion documenting all the results of the discussion and if the venn diagram and discussion is completed, the diagram is drawn back on paper (in full and in accordance with the results of the community).
