Did you know Icelandic phone books are listed by first names (not surnames)

in #education6 months ago

Icelandic phone books traditionally list people by their first names rather than surnames. This is because Iceland has a patronymic naming system, where a person's last name is derived from their father's first name.

Here's a breakdown of the Icelandic naming system:

First Name: This is chosen by the parents.
Patronymic: This is formed by adding "-son" (for sons) or "-dóttir" (for daughters) to the father's first name.
For example, if a man named Bjorn has a daughter named Anna, her full name would be Anna Björnsdóttir.

Since patronymics are not unique identifiers, especially with a smaller population, listing phone numbers by first name makes more sense in Iceland.
