Yard Sale Finds

in #education9 years ago

Yesterday I went to check the mail and noticed a yard sale just a couple houses down. Curious I wandered over to peruse the wares. There was an odd collection of things: half a drum kit, a free TV of the fat back variety, some clothes, and saddle bags among others, but what interested me were the books!

There were three boxes of books all marked $1 a piece, but the lovely lady hosting the sale told me they were going for $.50 now. I couldn't resist.

Sifting through the self-help guides and books about getting closer to Christ, I found some real gems. I walked away with eleven books for a price of $5.50. These weren't just any old books either, some of them were the greats.

All in all I found:.

Johnny Panic and the Bible of Dreams and The Bell Jar, both by Sylvia Plath.

Light in August and As I Lay Dying, both by William Faulkner.

Tales of the Jazz Age by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad.

A Writer's Diary by Virginia Woolf.

Love Poems by Anne Sexton.

And the Hippos were Boiled in their Tanks, a collaborative work by Jack Kerouac and William S. Burroughs.

New Stories from the South: 1996, with a "new story by William Faulkner, edited by Shannon Ravenel.

Lastly I found The Real Man's Guide to Fixin' Stuff by Nick Harper.

As you can imagine, I'm highly excited to dive into these. It came to my attention, too, that many of these are books discussed in college level English literature courses. So, if you're starting college, or continuing, don't discount your local yard sales. You might find something you need.
