How's it going Zach? We have been using a ground cover because our weeds were so bad we could not get them under control. We use similar gardening as you do, but the weeds got set in a few years ago with some very invasive species and we could not get rid of them.

For those who don't have much in the way of money, they can use the tarps of lumber units. Most lumber yards will let you have them for free, they are light weight, and they go a long way for a long time. I will say, I don't know if there is any chemicals that leech out of them over time. We are hoping after a couple of years the weeds will be gone and we won't have to use it anymore.
