PUBLIC SPEAKING CLASS 101: What you need to know before having a conversation next time, even if you are not a public speaker

in #education7 years ago (edited)

After much celebration and jubilation for making it this far, I want to seize this medium to communicate my heart felt wishes to all steemians both Nigerians and globally on a successful “cross over” to 2018. But, despite the fact that so many people might have written down their goals and plans or even well typed for this year. I would want you to sojourn with me on this voyage I called - Public Speaking Class 101

Public speaking is a very vital phenomenon. It is a curriculum vitae to the existence of human beings. And gradually, we are going to ensure (with the help of Media & you to champion the campaign) to see that it is being added to the major courses taken both at secondary and tertiary levels. Because, this will be a one good source to generate leaders, entrepreneurs and skillful people who can think on the spot and make impact in people's lives couple with a sound knowledge of ICT. Because a good speaker without the world most sorted after piece which is ICT is incomplete.

Public speaking is growing vastly and really becoming a part of our daily activities. Although, you may want to argue with me base on the fact that many of you are not doing it for living. Save for few ratio of people whose daily income comes from speaking, remaining ratio do it or serve as a means of communication. Do you now have the idea of what I am painting?
Public speaking is inseparable from communication, while communication is sinoquanon to the existence and flow of goods and services between the people. Remove communication from the globe and you will find it dead in the next few minutes.

That is why it is important that next time you come across someone blabbing, screaming or even stammering (lol) make sure you lend him or her your ears because in public speaking we do more than that. Communication via public speaking moves this world!

In next few minutes, I will engage you with key recipes you need to know in your daily conversation especially when it is with a different person, firm, organization or company other than your family, friends and close pals.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE HAVING A CONVERSATION, EVEN IF YOU ARE NOT CONSIDERING A CAREER IN PUBLIC SPEAKING

images (15).jpg

Let's run through this very quickly;

ASK & MAKE USE OF PROPER SALUTATIONS/TITLES

images (3).png

Often times, you get corrected as regards the wrong usage of salutations/titles because you are in a rush to jump to conclusions, I know how awkward that moment can be for you when you get corrected over and over again. Trust me that's why you're in this class. And note this, humans are characteristically made for two major reasons, that is; “Self Interest & Self Appraisal”

Don't be too timid, shy or even rigid not to ask politely from the recipient, “which of the salutations shall I address you with sir/ma?”. Mind you the reference to salutations here goes beyond calling the recipient sir/ma irrespective of their age and status. Call them by their titles and they will be glad to listen to your pleas or what you have to say.
Try this next time in your conversation

REGISTER YOUR NAME WITH THEM BEFORE YOU END THE CONVERSATION, I MEAN NAME NOT NICK

unnamed (2).png

There is a urge to always say your nickname before your real name. Please, stop it now that you can still do it before you enter the commercial world. Inside there nobody cares or will listen to you with your nickname as a tag, that is if they give you the audience. So, the mistake you don't want to make is blow your last opportunity with your silly act.

Ensure that they keep your name with them probably save it in a dairy or pad because with that singular act you have at least 25% attention from them. Don't be lackadaisical about theirs too because that will show how committed and sincere you can be if you eventually connect with them.

KNOW ONE IMPORTANT THING ABOUT THE PERSON

download.jpg

Let me start this way, you're a steemian on this platform and I know you may or may not be a good & vast writer but you own a blog. This is apt and simple about you reading this right now, I think even if you haven't seen me before, through this expression about you. You feel comfortable to chat with or even converse with me.

Probably, you had that opportunity to meet someone you don't know before. Go extra mile to research about them if you have that luxury of time, when you start showing interest in them ,they will give you more attention than before. Because some people lost the benefits of their conversation base on the fact that they were not able to maintain a scale of balance between what they are hearing and what their mind is processing.

BE GENUINE AND OPEN, BE SINCERE WITH WORDS

images (16).jpg

Yes, this is the bottom line of everything. Most times, some people feel like exaggerating words probably to add flavour to their story in order to be considered or sorting after cheap favour. But, large number of those tricks failed because the very moment your recipient discover that there is no iota of truth in your statement. Automatically, that will discredit you.

Instead why don't you paint it exactly the way you saw or heard it. The impact a word has is not in the ingeniunity of those words but the speaker. Remain who you are and be open minded.

IF NOT ASKED, DON'T BE TOO QUICK TO SHARE YOUR CARDS

images (17).jpg

Although, this is not really a serious issue but sometimes it may ruin the time and conversation you might have had because it depends on the occasion, where you met and the kind of person.

While some people may prefer you drop your cards, some may want your direct contact. And if you're too forward to give them card, you will ruin the opportunity of them having your contact which is a direct link. Because that act can seems rude to them. So thread carefully in your conversation with someone different from your friends, family or close pals next time.

Thank you for your time, see you in next class. Ensure to practice these in your daily conversation with people because they're existing facts.

I agree with all of your points. As a matter of fact, i am a public speaker and therefore can relate.
The goal of a public speaking is not to impress but impart(another tip).

One way or the other, we are all speakers even if we don't have a large audience before us. Our conversation with friends and colleagues should be done in utmost modesty as you have stated here. Thanks for sharing.

Wow, this is an interesting piece. I have learned something today and I will relate some of the points you've mentioned and see if the result would be one to testify about.

I love public speaking. It builds courage.

Feel free to share your opinion below after application sir

Have your unique style too. It helps your audience enjoy you.
