A Society of Failure

in #education7 years ago

As a parent, there is a certain irony in realizing that we are back in school with our children, retaking subjects and doing homework that we have not seen for years. Is it my imagination that the homework load of 2 hours a night for a 5th grader is greater than when I was in 5th?

I don't have a problem with the amount of homework, but it feels as if the education system uses it as a crutch to justify their failures.

"It's not our fault that we can't develop children to be the best in the world. We gave them all this homework and we test them incessantly. We did everything possible."

Are our school systems more of warehouse or even babysitting service?

My high-schooler learns in a strict and regimented system. Unable to chat with friends in hallways between classes. The rule - No loitering. This cannot be an ideal learning environment.

Can we not just admit to ourselves that our education system is broken?
