ENGLISH LANGUAGE CONFUSING WORDS SERIES #8: THERE VS. THEY’RE VS. THEIR

Steemit will succeed  when THERE is clear understanding of how it works. The writers contribute to the community by writing and posting blogs. THEY’RE the primary assets of Steemit. THEIR contributions create and build the value of Steemit and STEEM.

DISCLAIMER: I am not an English Native Speaker nor an expert in English language. What I write here are all from experience and research. If you feel I am out of line or say the wrong things, please alert me in the comments. To this effect, I am not immuned to these confusing words myself and this series is as much as an education for me as to those who read these blog posts.

THERE VS. THEY’RE VS. THEIR

Looking at the previous posts, some words may be spelled differently but most of them are pronounced exactly the same. They’re called “homophones”, words with the same sounds when pronounced. This is the main reason of the mistakes even native speakers make. But let’s make things clearer here.

THERE is the opposite of “here”. Used as and adverb, THERE points to another location but “here”. As a pronoun, it introduces a noun or a clause.

Example #1: THERE is a wide range of excellent posts in Steemit.

Example #2: Here in Steemit I get paid for my posts. Over THERE in Facebook I only get “Likes”.

THEY’RE is a contraction of the words “they are”. It is usually followed by a present participle like words ending in “ing”.

Example #1: THEY’RE are going to like Steemit because of its rewards system for blogging.

Example #2: The reason why THEY’RE leaving Facebook for Steemit is because of the incentives that the writers get for their contributions.

THEIR is a possessive pronoun/adjective in plural form. It implies possession of something or something “belonging to” them.

Example #1: The community members and THEIR support for Steemit will help it move to the ranks of popular social media communities.

Example #2: If members put THEIR best efforts in promoting Steemit, it will not take long for the blockchain social media to make it to the top.
