Who are you financing when buying Coca-Cola? 💀

in #education7 years ago (edited)

Coca-Cola is not just a drink, you know. It is an icon, a culture, the toppled product of one of the most powerful multinationals in history. What everyone does not know is that Coca-Cola hides many secrets over the more than 100 years it exists.

#1 Nazi-Cola

Among the most sad and black pages in the history of this drink is also to mention the one that sees it protagonist during World War II. During the war, the tops of coca cola, had close ties with the Nazi regime.

Coca Cola was in fact one of the main business partners of the Nazis yet the basic ingredients for preparing the caffeine-based soft drink where scarce. This is how Max Keith, the renowned head of the German branch of the company, decided to create an alternative drink, using wastes from the production of other industries, such as cheese and apple citrus, and add as much fruit it was possible getting from italy. The result is a sparkling drink named Fanta.

#2 Cocaine

Coca-cola and cocaine, have a common ingredient: coca. The formula of the famous drink remains strictly secretive but the company has admitted to use as an aroma, the decocained essence of coca leaves. This explains the name and the slightly exciting effect of Coca-Cola.

At the end of the eighteenth century, cocaine was a legal substance used as analgesic and John Doc Pemberton, who invented the drink for cure for headache, did not hesitate to include among the ingredients, the coca extract to enhance the flavor .

Only in 1903, the New Jersey plant, where this extract was produced, decided to eliminate the active ingredient

So for the previous 20 years, the Coca-Cola consumption has probably led to questionable effects.

#3 Plachimada

That of the Plachimada plant, is now a historic and emblematic event.

Was designed in March 2000 with the aim of producing 1.224,000 Coke bottles a day and got the license to install a pump, but also started to unleash millions of liters of drinking water illegally.

According to local people, the plant pumped at least a million and a half liters per day.

The ground level began to drift vertically, ranging from 150 to 500 meters in depth.

The peasants and the villagers complained that they could not put aside the necessary water because new wells were still coming up with serious impacts on agricultural crops.

When the allegations were confirmed by the fact that the company was unable to provide a detailed report requested by the local authorities, a request was made to appear in court and the license was revoked.

At that point Coca-Cola tried (failing) to bribe the president by offering him 300 million rupees.

Coca Cola did not just steal the water from the local community. It polluted the one that did not take: the company has deposited waste material near the plant that, during the rainy season, dissipated in fields and wells.

After that 260 wells made available by the public authorities as drinking water sources had run out, the Coca-Cola company used them as a storage facility for their waste processing.

In 2003, the district medical officer informed Plachimada's population that their water was no longer drinkable.

Women had to walk for miles to reach sources of drinking water.
