🎓Student Debt Is Getting Ridiculous🎓~Week 1

in #education9 years ago (edited)

In my opinion student debt has gotten
ridiculous in Canada where I currently live,.

Estimates suggest average student debt in
Canada is past the $25,000 mark.

Now I've only been in school for maybe a year and a half and I am already close to approaching that figure, I am a 22 year old taking Art and culture based courses, Philosophy, Writing, some astronomy and psychology. Classes that I feel help me contribute to being a more functional and helpful part of this world,

Im barley halfway done my studies and they are already asking me to start making payments on my debt and I am struggling to make my rent at the moment, I'm not writing this to directly ask for help, but more so to try and identify and wrap my head around an ongoing problem in our system,

How do normal people handle these circumstances, if it wasn't for a little bit of luck, hard work and thinking for myself id be in a lot deeper trouble, ~ truly an old fashioned hole diggin!

So we're gona try something, every week ill update you guys on the status of my impending doom and maybe together we can find a way to alleviate some of the debt using my philosophy and ability to lyrically wax alongside the beauty of the @steem community, ;)

??

I also wanna ask you guys your opinions on the whole sham or blessing government education funding is,.. here it goes.

1. Is student debt worth the burden for the oppertunity to get a higher education?

2. Is it wrong of them to demand payment while still being enrolled?

3. Should there be debt forgiveness and interest free payment options?

I for one had no choice, if i wanted to learn and go to school I had to take the risk- take on the loan and essentially condemn myself to years of struggling, but in return I got alot of confidence and faith in my own self and ability to make choices in my own life

Week One

Current Student Debt:??25,000 CAD

See you guys next week when we discuss student debt and the implications a little further, and give you guys an update on what we're receiving from the community to help,

Thanks for reading and for all the help,
resteems and donations are tremendous

  1. Is student debt worth the burden for the oppertunity to get a higher education?
I feel as if going to college has almost become the "cookie cutter" way of life. Many jobs are requiring degrees. I feel it is very important to be cognitive of how much you are actually burdening yourself with and come up with a plan to pay it off, as I see you have already started with using steemit as a platform. A lot of private universities in the USA can cost $50,000 just for the classes, not including housing. I started at a community college for my first year of school costing about $2000 per semester and I made sure my credits could transfer towards a bigger 4-year school. I then transferred to a local state university that costed me about$8000/semester. Im rambling but maybe it will help you to consider what you want to do with the education in order to carve out a career in order to pay off the debt and support yourself for the years to come. I do not think it is a good idea to just go to college to just go, there needs to be somewhat of a plan behind it because if you don't know why you are doing it then it would seem as a waste of time/money when you could instead be developing a business or working elsewhere full-time through connections and other skills (neither need college education).
  2. Is it wrong of them to demand payment while still being enrolled?
That is messed up! However I do know that many schools/banks/loan agencies do ask for payment if you take time off or go part-time. I think they might get nervous about their investment in the student to be more risky of these such events occur, thus, they ask for money back sooner.
  3. Should there be debt forgiveness and interest free payment options?
Interest free payment or lower rates, maybe...But in the US government, student loans are one of the two types of debt that you cannot escape from unfortunately. This brings me back to the fact that you should really know what you want out of the college and weigh the pros and cons if it will benefit you in the long run, otherwise you can probably learn everything that is taught in colleges online through professional advise and many of the free education outlets that are becoming more and more available. (ex iTunesU, KHAN Accademy, podcasts, etc). In the end, you are signing your life away to the loan giver and the only real reason is for a stupid piece of paper that many specific employers are looking for.

Take care! Hope I helped a little bit, look forward to future posts!

The devaluation of college degrees in concerning. A degree of a good or decent college used to be valuable. Nowadays it's decreasing in value because basically anyone has them now.

But the worst part is that you are screwed if you don't have one nowadays, because they are so normalist. So people are almost forced to get into debt in order to get a degree.

precicely how I felt , at 20 years old i was a highschool drop out (it wasn't intellectually stimulating) i did my thing for awhile, played music, built guitars, but eventually got into college just off of a paper I wrote so i decided id take out the loan and see where it could go ,

but it honestly was over glorified book learning that i could have easily gotten for the price of library late fees,,,now i feel trapped in the system with no forseeable out, haha

Student loans are one the biggest rip offs... In US, the government is planning ahead based on the loan interests they will recover! Think about that for a second...

so true, haha. *this is my experiment *,
we will see how many consecutive weeks ill be posting about this, until mine is paid off,
hopefully we get some resteems and coverage along the way :)

I'm a highschool dropout with 75 thousand debt. Go figure. Hope steemit can help you pay some of those debts!

we can only hope,, or consistently address it until it resolves itself , either way bahaha
