A NEED TO GUIDE AGAINST CULTISM IN TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS OF NOWADAYS.
Few Months ago, Before I left school for vacation, a guy was shot to death in my faculty. It was indeed a Sad news for all the staffs and students of the school.
After thorough investigation, it was deducted that the guy was once a cult member too. That was the reason why he was killed.
This incident prompted me into writing this article.
WHAT IS CULTISM?
Cultism is a secret organisations whose activities are kept away from the knowledge of public. Cults are groups that often exploit their members psychologically, economically, socially, educationally and financially by making their members abide by rules and regulations outside their wishes.
Examples of prominent cult in schools are : Black axe, Eye confraternity, Bucanear etc.
A cultist in action is a brutal, gun-totting, trigger happy, axe-matchet or sword wielding, blood thirsty individuals who springs suprise attacks on percieved enemies, maiming or killing them, and disappearing within seconds of his atrocity, leaving people and the relations of the victim shocked, aggrieved and traumatized.
PREVENTIVE MEASURES AGAINST CULTISM
Various efforts have been made by the Government ranging from the enactment of law such as; Decree 47 of December , 1989 which gave the governing council of the universities in Nigeria to proscribe any unlawful society within campus, federal house of Representatives bill that specified jail term of five years for student convicted of participating in cult activities and other measures. But other means that can enhance the eradication of cultsm are
1.Good parental care, "Know your child and the person he / she move with.
2.Counselling in the school and at home.
3.Proper good teacher - students relationship.
4.Visitation of parents to school to inquire about the activities of one's child or children in school.
5.Good school - Community relations for proper monitoring of students.
6.The fear of God is the beginning if wisdom, efforts should be made at home, in the school, by religious organizations, among the peers, and by the entire community to inculcate the fear of God into the children.
FEW REASONS WHY STUDENTS GIVE IN TO CULTISM
Cultism is an anti - social and a non conforming behaviour which contravenes the social rules and norms of the community, sudents are attracted to secret cults for a variety of reasons, some of which are:
1.Academic weakness.
2.Satisfaction of sexual urge.
3.Protection from rival groups in the school.
4.Students threatened by lecturers with a fail grade.
5.Students from a family with a history of court membership.
6.Unsecured Students as a result of parental separation or divorcee.
7.Students from a low income or poverty ridden family who has suffered material depreviation.
