Learn the Basics of Sign Language

GOOD DAY EVERYONE!

Today i'm going to teach you how to do some BASIC SIGN LANGUAGE. To be honest, i'm not really an expert to this kind of language but I have some fundamental skills and knowledge about it because of my college degree which is Bachelor or Elementary Education Major in Special Education.

What's the point and importance of knowing and learning these things? Simple. I just want EVERYONE TO BE SENSITIVE about others especially to the DEAF PEOPLE. By being knowledgeable even on just some basic sign language is already a great thing! You have somehow the skills to communicate with them. It' a very simple yet very humbling gesture to make. Persons who are deaf are PLEASED when others learn their language. 💗

The sing languages that i'm going to teach are greetings and some basic expressions. ☺

Number 1. "Hi!"

Use your dominant hand. Mine is right so i user my right hand. It's like spelling out the word "hi". Make a letter "h" alphabet sign language on your left or right/left side of your forehead where your dominant hand is at. Then, move it away from your forehead and immediately make an "i". That's it! That's for "hi" sign language.

Number 2. "Hello"

It's almost just the same with the "hi" sign language. Again, and as always, use your dominant hand, do the "h" alphabet sign language. Put it on your forehead then move it away then immediately make letter "o" afterwards.

Nember 3. "Good morning"

Let's do first the sign langauge of the word "good". Place your left/right dominant hand on your chin. Move it away downwards.
Next is for the word "morning".
Normally the contact for the sign MORNING is done at the wrist. The dominant hand is hyper extended at the beginning of the sign and the non-dominant hand is actually touching near the elbow. This allows for a lot of "movement" to help convey the idea that a lot of time is passing. Then rise your dominant hand/arm. It means that the sun is rising which is basically, morning.

Nember 4. "Good Afternoon"

Do again the good sign language. After,
Your nondominant hand should lay flat. Then the elbow of your dominant hand should be placed on the top of the fingers of your nondominant hand. It depicts that the sun us up above already which means it's noon or afternoon.

Number 5. "Good evening"

First is the good sign. For the evening, first, touch the elbow of your dominant hand to the fingers of your nondominant hand. Then bend it slowly then stop.

Number 6. "Good night"

This is a two part sign. First sign “good” by touching one flat hand to your chin and bringing it down. Next sign night by bringing one arm parallel to your body and then rest the forearm of the second arm on the fingertips of the first. Slowly lower the second hand down like the sun is setting over the horizon. Put together this is Good Night!

Number 7. "I Love You"

It's simple. To sign I Love You, put up your thumb, index finger and pinkie finger, while keeping your ring finger and your middle finger down. Hold the hand out, palm facing away from you and move it back and forth slightly. Why it's this way? It's because when you finger spell the first letters of each words which are the I, L, and Y, and cobine them together, it'll form this kind of a hand figure.

Number 8. "Sorry"

To sign sorry, make your hand into a fist and rub it in a circular motion across your chest. It is like you are rubbing around your heart because you are truly sorry.

I got all of these knowledge way back when I was still in my college days. We are following the ASL (American Sign Language). I also refer to this book entitled Signing Illustrated The Complete Learning Guide which was authored by Mickey Flodin. It's not an original book as what you can see since it was just reproduced via soft bound photocopy.

Take note guys, I just shared with you my insights from where i've learned it. Not all sign languages are the same. It varies especially on the country that one dwells. I hope you will all enjoy and learn somehow the basics of sign language.
