Ways in which children can be taught about empathy, gratitude and compassion

Children are born with these possibilities of being empathetic, of being grateful and of being compassionate with others, but as they grow up, due to different circumstances many times those skills are lost, it can also be learned but it is easier when it is maintained since birth when it is already given.

These values can be inculcated and encouraged from childhood, since we make a mirror function, where children observe and do what they see in the adult.

In the environment of values tend to turn a series of false beliefs, where you can even confuse compassion with hurt.

Compassion in our culture is associated with beliefs and compassion is seen as hurt, as something poor, and not necessarily have that meaning. Compassion is the feeling that generates us and drives us to want to help, to provide well-being, to make the other person feel better in some way. Seeing it from that point of view, compassion is having a more loving than sorrowful feeling. This approach is more human and much more positive.

Measuring the impact of the things that are said and that affect children in the acquisition of positive values

Saying terrible things about themselves and having children listen to them is not good at all, because it is affecting their thinking, their belief, inculcating something negative that will not bring any good results.

For example:

❖ What a fool I am.

❖ How I allowed myself to be so stupid.

❖ I am a bad person.

❖ Compassion is not given to me.

You have to teach children to have self-pity and if they make mistakes, nothing happens, that's what learning after the mistake is about, getting the right answer.

Give value to some behaviors and behaviors that help the development of the child and that promote what is learned from childhood, because it can be developed.

Teach about empathy to see results for the benefit of the child

Empathy is the ability you have to put yourself in the shoes of the other person. Imagine:

❖ How the other person feels.

❖ What happens?

❖ What can you think?

But with a very particular characteristic, which is not to get lost in the other person, because that confuses but it is necessary to understand that each person has their individuality.

How do we make the child begin to relate these concepts?

It is a skill that varies between children, it is a skill that involves training, perhaps a little more than compassion, this value has to be worked on a bit more to maintain it.

A school child who is between seven and eight years old can understand, as follows:

When a classmate does not carry food in his lunchbox, it is necessary for the adult to ask the child, how should one act?

Thus we can teach the child to learn the sense of empathy, to flow in his personality.

How do we speak of gratitude to children?

To instill this value and have it as an example in the development of children, we can put into practice the following:

Talk to the children and tell them that before going to bed, have a moment to reflect and give thanks for the day they have had.

For example by:

❖ The food.

❖ Where to live

❖ Have a place to sleep.

❖ For having friends.

❖ Parents, among others.

With only having the opportunity to live and be in these conditions, you are grateful.



 
Tools must be provided so that children have an adequate development, but always with the example we offer.
