Why a career lattice?

There is no longer a straight path to move forward in the workplace
When we launched Caila, may people asked, ‘Why the name Caila?’. It stands for Career Lattice. The next question, was ‘Why lattice?’ We are focused on helping people move up the preverbal Career Ladder, but today there is not more ladder, because there is not just one path to advance in your career and get promoted. A lattice is meant to represent that there are multiple pathways to advance in your career. You can switch jobs entirely, transfer to a new devision or role in the company that is not necessarily one level higher or event in the same field.

We did not ‘coin’ the phrase and it is not new, but our purpose is centered around enabling people to move in different professional directions on the lattice — in the least expensive way possible (ideally without taking on debt) and as quickly as possible. With the increasing pace of change in the workplace, easily making professional moves and retaining is going to increase in importance.

Our journey started focusing on increasing access to higher education, and the more feedback we received the more people wanted ‘directions’ for advancing professionally, which is why advancing on your career lattice became our focus.
