A Response for the Abundance/Waste Challenge - EcoTrain Question of the Week Part 2/4

in #ecotrain5 years ago

For this challenge we were asked to find something we have in abundance and using our creativity, think of ways to re-purpose it.

In my response to part 1 of this challenge - find it here I spoke of how I love to share my seeds and plants.

For the second part it involves sharing plants too!

At the school where I work with the Pre-K (we do lots of growing with the kids and a project we have going is growing Tiny Tim tomatoes, with each child getting a tomato producing plant to take home in the large peanut butter jars we re-purposed as pots) they are holding a student conference.

They asked me to do a "Planting with Pat" session. and I said sure!

Succulent Starts

I chose to do a project with succulents, which I have plenty of and they can easily be propagated, simply by setting a leaf on top of the soil where it puts out roots and begins to grow a whole new plant!

At first I was going to purchase little clay pots for their new plants but with this new challenge I thought I'd combine the lesson on propagating plants with a lesson on reusing/re-purposing.

The Pre-K class had been gifted a box of fruit cups which comes in a dish that would be perfect for pots for their succulents, all we would have to do is poke some holes in the bottom for drainage!

There is all sorts of things you can re-purpose for planting pots.

  • for seedlings I use egg cartons, egg shells or make pots out of newspaper.
  • old boots make lovely, character planters.
  • old tubs or even toilets make good planters.

Use your imagination and I'm sure you can come up with all sorts of ideas for containers to plant in!

With this planting session the kids will see how to get plants for free and free containers to pot them in too!

Along with that you can open their minds to the abundance around them!

Let's have Abundance for All!

Ooooh NICE one @porters! Yup - those succulents, once they're in their happy place, they breed like rabbits. LOVELY idea to share with the littlies and to also include a practical upcycling lesson.

Ah, what a lovely thing to do with kids. My Mum works in the school kitchen garden and they have a lot of fun doing such things. Nice job.

That would be fun to do working in the kitchen garden. We've been trying to get a school garden going here for awhile but we keep running into stags - always on the final details. So frustrating!

All it takes is for us to open our minds and be creative and then we will be able to repurpose almost every thing. There is a lot out there that we can use to improve urban gardening and food security.

I love the idea of eggshells or egg crates for holding seedlings. Once they outgrow these receptacles, the young plants don't need to go through the trauma of transportation, but the shell / cardboard can be moved as it is, to decompose in the soil.
