The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope sees galaxies of all shapes, sizes, luminosities and orientations in the cosmos. Sometimes, the telescope gazes at a galaxy oriented sideways — as shown here. The spiral galaxy featured in this Hubble image is called NGC 3717, and it is located about 60 million light-years away in the constellation of Hydra (the Sea Serpent). Seeing a spiral almost in profile, as Hubble has here, can provide a vivid sense of its three-dimensional shape. Through most of their expanse, spiral galaxies are shaped like a thin pancake. At their cores, though, they have bright, spherical, star-filled bulges that extend above and below this disk, giving these galaxies a shape somewhat like that of a flying saucer when they are seen edge-on.
Meanwhile, Typhoon Hagibus has left a trail of death and destruction in Japan. It has since been downgraded to a tropical storm after making landfall on Saturday. Helicopters, boats and thousands of troops have been mobilized across the country to rescue people. At least 19 people have died, and at least 16 people are missing. About 100 people have been injured. One woman fell to her death from a rescue helicopter, The Associated Press reports. The AP reports: "The Tokyo Fire Department said a woman in her 70s was accidentally dropped 131 feet to the ground while being transported into a rescue helicopter in Iwaki city in Fukushima prefecture, a northern area devastated by the typhoon.
The typhoon made landfall south of Tokyo in Shizuoka prefecture with strong rain and powerful winds hitting the central and northern parts of the country. The storm was coming ashore as a 5.7-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of neighboring Chiba prefecture.

Amazing images. People rarely talk about these mega storms after they "make landfall" but we're totally feeling it here in Northern Thailand. Some serious flash flooding this afternoon - was driving my truck and actually wondering if I;d make it through the deep water at one point.
