Maybe your bf was really (ineffectively) simply trying to ask for your focus and attention. People watching is great but yes, can be perceived as a lack of care and presence when you're out with someone. I get that.
I'm guessing being an architect shapes so much of the way you see the world and construct (pun intended) everything around you, including relationships. It would be interesting to study, sometime, how our career choices affect our way of relating to our loved ones. :)
