The grand-daddy of all US government statistics is the US census. And if one looks back into the corruption and double dealing that's transpired in that data... including the loss of 99.9% of all the census data from 1890 and before. Due to a mysterious fire and response to the fire. One can imagine where the current politicians learned the method.
