Thoughts on black panther - spoilers

in #economics7 years ago

I saw black panther, the marvel movie, with my girlfriend on friday and i've been thinking a lot about it.

I really enjoyed the movie. It was one of the best marvel movies I have ever seen - one of the better movies I have seen recently. I liked it for the powerful women, the majority black cast, the powerful villain, and ideas. But as a economics major I really enjoyed the underpinning theme that was present.

The thesis and anti-thesis was protectionism vs free trade. The ideas were embodied by killmonger and T'Challa.

Killmonger saw the oppression of blacks across the globe and wanted to help the blacks throw off their oppressors. Killmonger was looking to export the hidden technology in order to overthrown and kill off the oppressive governments.

Meanwhile, T'Challa and his predecessors had built a thriving kingdom in the middle of Africa but it was hidden from the world. They fought to keep their technology secret and safe from the rest of the world. They did no trading or receiving aid from foreign countries - complete isolationists.

But eventually T'Challa learned an important lesson from killmonger. He learned to throw off the past and engage in free trade and scientific discovery with foreign countries at the end of the film. Rather than just defeating the main villain of the film, the hero learned something from the villain and grew from him. And in doing so killmonger did not die in vain.

The oppressed blacks in america and across the world will now be getting a good education and advancements in powerful technology. But just no weapons used for killing.

It was a powerful and fun movie. Not only for the action and showing minorities in positions of power and wealth. But for the themes it explored. The dichotomy of free trade vs protectionism is prevalent in our current society as well. It helped reaffirm free trade in the eyes of every audience member who watched this film. It was worth a watch.
