We all should be able to be privileged

in #economics7 years ago

Economist Yanis Varoufakis crafted his latest book via an explanation to his 12 yr old daughter about what a just economy should look like. He cites his daughter as typical of many young people, very concerned about feminism, racism and inequality but not the drab topics of politics and economics per se.

Yanis Varoufakis: ‘I would like to live in a world where we’re all privileged’

Crux of the Crisis

One of the challenges of the work was addressing capitalism without referring to capitalism, and thereby circumventing all the baggage, connotations, and myths of capitalism, or otherwise stated as the technical jargon that purposely leads to incomprehension. Varoufakis views the crisis as a system that it does not encourage humanism. It encourages misanthropy. The crux of the crisis is how to stabilize the situation while transitioning to new systems and technologies that can be put to use for humanity.

Privilege Should Abound

Varoufakis views that privilege should abound; he believes beauty is around us, we just need to empower the social circumstances to allow us to enjoy it and not wreck the environment. Everyone needs more direct control of one’s life, partners, and profession. If we all have that the world looks very beautiful to all and the privilege we can all have is shared.

Children, World, Hope... what more is there to know?

A Galaxy of Possibility Awaits

Unfortunately the privilege derived by the few currently comes at the price of exploitation. The millions or billions some may have in the bank, can they really believe they personally “earned” all that? The farmer who lives a subsistence life has exactly the same view about all he has worked for and earned. He is privileged too, but in a different kind of way. Happiness is rarely a function of privilege, but we all deserve the right to opportunity. Only when we come to grips and move on from pseudo-feudal capitalism will we be able to embrace the new world and galaxies of possibility available to the human race.

The book by Mr. Varoufakis is called Talking to My Daughter About the Economy

Mainstream economic thought lacks the understanding to properly evaluate many of the phenomena that are studied. In my opinion, the problem with economic thought nowadays started just about the same time the whole field of political economy started to evolve ( which is just about the same time the industrial revolution started).

The need (?) to categorize and make general assumptions on matters of production/distribution on a large scale has lead to the use of utilitarian terms. That probably wouldn't be a problem if the field of study was limited only on organizational matters but in microeconomics the application of strictly utilitarian terms in order to explain the behavior of persons, corporations ( agents as they call them in general ) narrows the scope of investigation and often leads to false impressions and assumptions and this can actually be dangerous if those assumptions are treated as the only rational explanations.

it suffers as it is reifying its own beliefs and lacks empirical analysis and alternatives. true, and political economy itself implies the whole system is political, which means class and money driven.

true, and political economy itself implies the whole system is political

That's a good observation.
Nowadays the ''political'' part is purposefully ommited in order to establish trust in the field, but I also believe that it is always ''silently implied'' and treated as some kind of sacred or something. Don't know if you get me here :P
