I held this conviction from an early age, you cannot own ideas, you cannot claim thoughts as your own and not allow others to share the same thought, no matter how original or who was the first to create it, it's completely arbitrary.

Legally speaking, no, you cannot own an idea. To copyright something it must be 1) an original work, and 2) in fixed, tangible form. You literally cannot own an idea according to US copyright law.
