Over thousands of people died in a 7.8 magnitude earthquake, struck the Northern and Central parts of Luzon, Philippines on this day in 1990 history.

According to a report quoted from History(dot)com (Saturday of 16/07/2016), the earthquake rocked for one minute at 16:26 local time, centered in Nueva Ecija Province, northern Manila, Philippines.

The quake lasted for 45 seconds, affecting six provinces, injuring innumerable and killing over thousands of people.

The devastating shocks devastated much of the largest island in the Philippines.
It was powerful and destructive, causing all types of buildings and houses collapsed, surfaces cracked, landslides occurred, highways were broken, and farms were flooded.

The death toll fell. Some even died from being trampled, as they crowded out of the building trying to save themselves. About 30 miners have been killed buried inside the gold and copper mine.

The 6-storey college building, Christian College, flattens to the ground and stores about 250 teachers and students. Rescue teams managed to save many people who were trapped, but unfortunately some of the victims were killed due to dehydration.

Lodging at Baguio resort - known as the Philippines' Summer Capital - suffered tremendous damage.

After the quake passed, nearly 100 thousand residents were forced to sleep in the open field, afraid to return to their homes in the midst of an aftershock that continues to shake.

For days the rescue teams evacuated, removing bodies buried in the building, searching for survivors.

Over thousand people are estimated dead and injured. The destruction of main roads caused by landslides made rescue efforts stunted many times.

Baguio is an area located between at least seven fault and is now listed as one of the most earthquake-prone cities in Asia.

In addition to the earthquake, the area also has high rainfall, increasing the likelihood of a massive landslide.

Today, (July 16), it will be 28 years since the 1990 earthquake struck.
