My Anwer To NewbieGames Jeopardy - Where Every Valid Answer Is A Winner: Solving World Hunger

in #earthnation7 years ago (edited)

World hunger is something we have all thought about one time or another. But for most of us - it's us just a passing thought.

We are not forced to confront the issue face to face with a gnawing feeling in our stomach as it is eating itself. Most of us have the luxury of not having to walk past our malnurished neighbors every day on our way to a filthy waterhole 1 mile away. So naturally - we don't really see it for the problem that it is. We've all seen Sally Struthers and more recently - that gentle faced bearded guy showing pictures of starving kids who want to eat a meal for just the price of a cup a coffee. The another commercial comes on reminding us that it's lobsterfest at the Red Lobster and all is well again.

The problem doesn't go away just because we can't see it anymore. World hunger continues to be a major problem that humanity is facing. However, this is not a new problem for use. It's a subject important to me because I know it is something that can actually be solved. As a species , we have been facing poverty and famine since the times of the bible - so why should anything be different today? Especially when we have so many more people on the this little planet.

This is why things should be different today.

We have more power than ever before to put an end to world hunger. The tools that our governments, scientists, and doctors have access to should be able to food into the mouth of every person on the planet. We have Genetically modified food that grows twice the normal size in less time and in any season. We have indoor farming technology to combat unpredictable weather patterns. We have more efficient means of production like hydroponics and aquaponics. We have a distribution network of the likes that have never been seen before with the ability to deploy food by land , air and sea with trucks, boats and planes. The ability to communicate across the world in seconds and report the conditions of the impoverished right into peoples living rooms and government think tanks. Many humans have more money than they will ever be able to spend. The problem has nothing to do with lack of resources , but everything to do with the lack of will.

In a world where Dubai can exist, indoor ski slopes are a thing, man made islands house the mega rich, and rovers are doing donuts on Mars - there are enough resources to feed the whole world if only the resources were deployed with purpose and compassion.

Sort:

IMHO there is still hunger in this world where we are producing enough to feed more than the population of the world because we lack compassion, uneven distribution of wealth, resources, and food. Also many of us is seeing it an opportunity to gain more wealth, more power.

I agree with you - in fact - I wanted to make this article longer , but it's for a contest and has a 300 word limit. SO i'm working on part 2 which is not a contest - but my own free form writing. The subject interested me and I had a lot of good info to include in it - so I will be posting that later tonight or tomorrow - but I'm going to highlight the fact that it has to do with not having systems in place to distribute food where needed. We have tons of food and in America we throw out millions of pounds of food per day - farmers will toss out vegetables because they have a funny shape - meanwhile - children are starving all over the planet who not give two shits what shape the fruit or vegetable is as long as it is edible. We grow corn and then turn it into fuel... there are so many areas that you could point to and call for improvement. One thing I know for sure - WE DO NOT HAVE A FOOD SHORTAGE - we just have shortage of people willing to do what it takes to fix it.

You are right. I once saw In a NatGeo documentary, UK supermarkets will throw away bananas when they get black spots in the skin but those bananas are perfectly good to eat. Anyway looking forward to reading your part two of the article.

what a waste! but so true ... in our home .. NOTHING goes to waste .. it is eaten by us, our dogs, or the compost bin where it becomes nutrient rich soil to grow more food with.

Good for you, the family, the environment, and the economy.

"The problem has nothing to do with lack of resources , but everything to do with the lack of will."

So true! We are in a time where money seems to rule all, even above human interaction. People would rather turn a blind eye to the hungry than to lend a helping hand. We can all do better! At least once a month, I bring bags of food to our local food bank, and I vow to continue to do that. I know that doesnt solve the worlds problem with hunger but its a start. Lead by example and people will follow. :)

thank you! people are so blinded by money that compassion is now a dwindling resource. But if they can figure out a way put a rover on Mars - then I'm sure we could figure out how to get some food to where it is needed. I feel like someone needs to go to these places and set up some kind of system that can sustain over the long term and allor folks to help themselves out instead of waiting fro these greedy donation organizations to send a few pennies their way.

Exactly! I wish there were an organization available to donate to that actually help the people and not the CEOs. Its like the compant that would send a dime to you in the mail saying that with a single dime a day, they could feed the hungry... Please take that dime back and feed the hungry then! Until then I will continue to help in ways that I know are available locally.

LOL @ the dime! .... well then why the hell are you sending it to ME then?
