A rapid rise of land above the ocean 2.4 billion years ago likely triggered dramatic changes in climate and existing life forms, as per a study in journal Nature. On studying oxygen isotope ratios in rocks, researchers suggested that newly exposed landforms weathered to release greenhouse gases, which led to the Great Oxygenation Event, bringing free oxygen into the atmosphere.
