I have read quite a lot about Dutch history lately and one of the most important names when you read about the Netherlands during the Golden Age (the 17th century) is a company named the Dutch West Indies company. But, what is it all about and why is it important?

The Dutch West India Company (West-Indische Compagnie or WIC in Dutch) was a company established in 1621 by the Dutch Republic with the primary goal of conducting and promoting trade and colonization in the Americas and Africa. It was a counterpart to the Dutch East India Company, which focused on trade and colonization in Asia.

The Dutch West India Company had several objectives and activities:

The company was involved in the transatlantic slave trade, the fur trade with Native Americans in North America, and trade with various European colonies in the Caribbean and South America.

It played a significant role in establishing Dutch colonies in the Americas, including New Netherland (which encompassed parts of what are now New York, New Jersey, Delaware, and Connecticut) and various Caribbean islands, such as Curaçao, Aruba, and Bonaire.

The company engaged in privateering activities, allowing it to attack and capture enemy vessels during times of war, which could be a lucrative source of income.

The WIC constructed forts and fortifications in its colonies to protect its trading interests and settlements. For example, it built Fort Amsterdam in Manhattan, which later became New Amsterdam (now New York City).

The company played a significant role in the Atlantic slave trade, transporting enslaved Africans to the Americas for labor on plantations and in mining operations.

The Dutch West Indies Company had trouble winning ground in North America, especially due to the presence of other colonial powers such as England and Spain. As a result, they lost their power their quickly and were unable to make the Dutch West Indies Company a success like the Dutch East Indies Company (which I will write more about on another day).

The company was dissolved in 1791. It was a success in many ways, and it definitely placed its mark on history. The biggest impact was made through the colonies it created in America and Africa.

You can learn more about all of this if you come to Amsterdam and join a guided tour. Most guides are well-educated in the history of the Netherlands and Amsterdam, and since it greatly impacted the blossoming Dutch culture in the 17th century, you will frequently hear about the Dutch East Indies Company and the Dutch West Indies Company as you join a guided tour in the Dutch capital.
