Dunkirk: my very amateurish review

in #dunkirk7 years ago

I'm generally an introspective person. As an anarchist who rejects the state it's odd how much i enjoy the war film genre. Especially considering i consider war film to usually be statist murder porn. Nevertheless it isn't difficult to get me not only to watch the latest war film on the big screen i also will get excited to go see them.

And Dunkirk was no different. From the first time i saw a trailer for Nolan's latest cinematic masterpiece i had excited anticipation for what looked like a great story told by through the direction of a master.

On Saturday night i finally got to go see it. Recovering from a recent eye surgery i thought i may not get to see it in the theater; my favorite way to watch most movies.

The theater was nearly empty. Between the 4 of us (me, another gentlemen, and a couple) the space was filled with the Dolby surround sound and our mutual desire to be entertained we strapped in.

The story follows 3 basic timelines that are interwoven. 1 story is from English pilots protecting the ships in the channel. Another is a young soldier doing whatever he could to escape being a sitting duck on the beach. The third follows a yacht pilot, his son, and his friend who were part of a campaign of civilian vessels sent to rescue 400,000 English soldiers trapped on the beach at Dunkirk.

The movie explores a lot of the ugly side of the human condition in war. It cuts no corners either; allowing the viewer to see that war isn't all heros and glamour. It gives the stink of fear and desperation. Cowardice and bravery. Death and life.

All in all on a a scale of 10 i give it a 10. It's my belief this film will be a timeless testament to the indignities of war while capturing an actual moment in history.
