B.A.L.S. - What is up with Dtube Daily?

in #dtubedaily8 years ago

Hey guys and gals!

Today I am answering a question that I received in my Discord.

Someone who has been faithful to Dtube Daily, both delegating Steem to their account, and staying active in their discord, has asked me why they never receive an upvote from them.

While there aren't written rules about how to spend your delegation, it seems to me that for a group that is specifically there to upvote and support those who create on Dtube daily, it is a gross oversight that this person hasn't yet received even one upvote, after 3 months of supporting DD and being consistent about daily uploads.

Tune in for more info and for Lady Steem's take on all this!

As always, if you have any questions for Lady Steem, put them down below or contact @bethwheatcraft in the discord!

Stay Steemy my friends!

xx - Lady Steem

As a founding member of DtubeDaily - I personally take offense to the nature of this complaint and video - DtubeDaily has ALWAYS been inclusive and encouraging to female creators - please take a moment and ASK neeqi, art.life, waybeyondpadthai, and lostinhappiness if they felt supported in this group especially with art.life and waybeyondpadthai being admin roles.
At dtubedaily we use an AUTOVOTE trail, not a guru that decides what is good and what isnt. We include people in the trail when they take the time and SUPPORT other people through their comments on the video, chatting in the discord, delegating, and basically anything that will increase overall support of each other. Many MANY people have come to Dtubedaily to say 'Hi' once then spam our video promo section and never comment or support anyone in the group whatsoever. This is natural, because they see it as being 'free money' and support. That is never what this group was supposed to be about.

The top three delegators in the group have contributed over $2000 in steem power even by todays prices (much more when it was first delegated) and that includes myself, and usually I get (along with anyone else on the trail) about 15-20 cents per video - so maybe you can see by the numbers here that this is not exactly a 'money grab'. Not to mention the countless hours that we have put into organizing collab videos, virtual meetups, real life meetups, and just generally being nice to each other in the chat whenever we can.

So yes - we are all real individuals that have worked very hard to make an environment that was different from the 'other' discords - and, no - that is not always perfect - but dang it we really DO TRY. Currently we have 70 people on our upvote trail, and the ENTIRE DISCORD is only slightly larger than that (with many of those not on the trail having not been active on the discord or steem for months). So to the one person that didn't get it - geez sorry, but I can also say with confidence that had you engaged with other members in the discord, like say, asking if they can get on the trail - this slight oversight would NEVER have happened. Or maybe they did ask someone but it got lost or forgotten. I really dont know. I do know that we are all caring individuals who would have done our best to make it right and make a fantastic discord. But now we are all scrambling to figure out who was left behind - while we are being anonymously attacked. And that really stinks.

The tone of this video is very accusatory. There is so much injustice in the world, I hope that you will refrain from mud slinging onto your fellow steemians like this in the future - especially with the current uncertainty of steem at the moment.

I didn't mean this as a personal attack, but clearly you have taken it that way seeing as you responded to my comment on your other post with vitriol.

I have been active on dtube "daily" for coming up on a year, and seeing as this is our first interaction, I am not shocked that you are unaware of my particular video style which tends to ask hard questions and try to get to the bottom of things.

Believe it or not, the person that contacted me wasn't the first person that had complained about DD being cliquey. (For that matter, I have heard a lot of chatter about a lot of the Dtube groups, especially from new people.) It's not about the value of the upvote. Everyone knows that a curation trail upvote isn't worth very much, but likely that people have felt as though they were trying to engage but either didn't feel particularly welcome in the Discord, or were disappointed in supporting your curation trail but never getting noticed.

And it's great for you to namedrop a couple of token ladies that you have promoted in your group, but the other truth bomb is that women are not treated particularly inclusively in these Discord groups, not to mention harassed by men outside of these groups. (And yes, even men that belong to DD. If you were offended by this video, you will likely not want to watch my upcoming one on sexual harassment in the Discord).

I really believe that you want what's best for the group and aren't deliberately ostracizing people from being a part of it, but for some individuals it doesn't necessarily come off that way.

2+2 is 4 minus 1 thats 3 quick maths. I smoke trees

The dunbar number is an important number to be aware of when it comes to networks. The average person will have some sort of minimal relationship with about 150 people. Beyond that, most won't even know who you are. Until you accomplish something that raises your usefulness beyond your clan, you can't reasonably expect support beyond that number.

This is also the reason that curation is broken. There are 36 whales. If one divides the 20000 active posts per day, that means a less than 1/500 chance of an upvote from them. Whales also stick to the dunbar number for the same reasons everyone else does.

New users often make the mistake of comparing themselves to earlier adopters of steem. In this sense, it is similar to a pyramid in distribution. But the more important factor by far is that it pales in comparison to the debasement of the USD.

Then some whales power down while asking new users to power up. It doesn't make for a good showing of human nature. However one should remember that this is why the blockchain exists. Eventually, the whales cash out, and it will eventually be too early to do so. When that happens, distribution becomes more even.

I don't think this particular issue was with the payout though, but rather feeling ostracized, not just via upvote but also in the Discord.

It's strange, as I am definitely not a feminist but I can certainly see where it is difficult for women to blend into the culture here to a degree. We are encouraged to join the Discords, but then once we do, it is difficult to really bond with some of the people we need to in order to form the kinds of connections we are supposed to. The talk in the general Discord can get hairy pretty fast, but that's also where most of the "bonding" happens. (Male to male anyway) Though if we then try to get to know people personally in DM then many men have taken advantage of that, asking for dirty pics, saying nasty things, (aka things that they would never do in main chat). It's quite frustrating to be honest.

I didn't see much worth doing in Discord. Just a bunch of names on the right of nobody I knew. Felt strange just clicking and sending a message to complete strangers.

Yeah I left a lot of the groups, but I have a couple of really cool friends now.

I didn't see any groups listed, just individuals. Maybe there's a problem with the mac version of discord.

It hurts to hear this. I say that as a human being and not as one of the founders of DtubeDaily. You hit on some very valid points in the video and I can only but apologise profusely. If the person in question is reading this wants to reach out to me privately I'd be happy to apologise in person in a non-judgemental manner and help show some support that has clearly been missed.

DtubeDaily was founded upon like minded individuals and with a strong focus on a family feel. I feel a great thing within our Discord is that everyone is so welcoming and approachable and hope we can show this to the person in question. Sometimes people make mistakes and this oversight is not worthy of excuses. We want to support each and everyone who is part of the community in anyway we can.

Drop me a DM on discord and we can have a chat and chance to maybe help each other out :)

That is a really sweet response.

I realize that this post came off rather hawkish, but I have just been hearing so much about the cliqueyness in the Discords that my tone was...harsh.

I left all the Discords that I belonged to a while ago because of a few people in particular who made me uncomfortable, and because even though I have been a daily creator for a while now, I still felt left out, especially when it was the "men's turn to talk", etc. This has nothing to do with DD of course, but I haven't been seeing what's been going on in the Discord groups and have only relied on what I am hearing people tell me.

I will try to encourage the person I spoke to to reach out. Though they would likely be scared of recourse, due to some of the other reactions to this video. I would be happy to talk to you in person though, and perhaps make a more fair-outlooked video.

Thanks for your response.
