ONE HUNDRED DAYS OF VLOGGING (and why I chose to break the streak) | The Roving Vlogger Days 99 & 100 (2018-01-07)
My hundredth day of vlogging snuck up on me, so I didn't plan an appropriate celebration! I would have gone to a restaurant, but after being in Montana where we went to 5 restaurants in less than 2 weeks I'll need some time before that becomes special again.
Instead, I celebrated with a little dance party to Kishi Bashi and Francis and the Lights. Then we finished Season 2 of Stranger Things, which we had started EXACTLY one month before!
I've been working on celebrating all my little accomplishments more. All too often I have a way of rushing straight on to the next arbitrary goal, so that when I look back on my life I get this empty feeling that I've enjoyed all my days but that I've never achieved anything.
Then I realized that do remember celebrations. The graduation ceremonies that I thought were so pointless. The launch parties for the products I've worked on. And my brain goes, "Huh, maybe those were achievements after all!"
So, yeah, now I'm using stuffed animal dance parties to trick myself into thinking that filming my life for a hundred days is an actual accomplishment. Right now it doesn't feel like much, but maybe someday I'll hear "May I Have This Dance" by Francis and the Lights and think: "Remember when I used to be afraid of cameras and started filming myself every day? I'm glad I did that!"
THAT SAID, I have a dangerous behavior where I start to obsess over maintaining a streak. The "Don't Break the Chain" technique of habit-forming is far too effective on me. I'll work myself to the bone to keep a daily streak going, but if I miss a day then I completely fall apart.
So the day following my 100th video, I chose not to film at all. I even dreamt over the night that I had filmed, which really messed with my head. Because my real intention was never to hit a streak, it was to become comfortable on camera and document my life. And I plan to continue doing that in a normal, not-obsessive manner and dragging all of you along with me. And from now on out, taking days off means you'll get more interesting videos 3 days a week instead of 7 blah videos!
Thanks for stopping by! What kind of things do you celebrate (or not) in your life?

Woohoo! Congrats on the 100th! I remember seeing the very first one, and it's a bummer that I wasn't able to watch everything. You've made some improvements being in front of the camera, but I still feel Nash is more comfortable. With 100 eps behind you, I don't know if that'll ever change.
Oh, and I saw in your other post that you and Nash are making a startup. That's awesome! My fiancee and I have put our own startup on hold, so if you guys ever need a pair of hands, you know who to call... well, me, in case the Ghostbusters don't pick up.
Hehe, you didn't miss much along the way, and I'll still be posting some of the videos that I made during my own hiatus. I think I have that nervous energy in all parts of my life - I've seen it in other nerds too so maybe not too surprising.
We're making slow progress on the startup, but I'll keep you in mind if we ever get to a point where we can onboard others, thanks for the offer!
Look at me talking like I'm exempt from that nervous energy. I'm a nerd through and through!
I'll be waiting near the phone doing nothing else.
Nerd power!
Well...now I want pancakes. 100 days of vlogging is impressive! To not skip a day is really hard. I got the app "one second every day" which is supposed to make a compilation of your year in just by filming that one second. Guess what, I couldn't commit! Ha!
Oh yeah, I've seen those videos! It probably would be harder to remember to pull it out once a day than filming throughout the day - I even started thinking of my phone as "camera".
Can't wait to follow you on your vlogging journey :)
