I’ve been having a lot of meditative fun with layer masks recently, it’s become one of those little creative moment things that I’m enjoying dabbling with, in fact, after a recent YouTube sale I’m realising that actually the best kind of skills and life hacks that people want/need or are willing to swap a few bucks for are the ones where you make a video, show the thing, give them the resources and let them go wild with it ( hat-tip dayle for inspiration!)

The fact that you can totally customise the shapes included means you can make some really cool layer masks, I’m planning a whole batch of them for use on my blog but also for live streams, I think you could make some really interesting scenes for layering up like the Netflix screensaver looks for obs for instance, then I could put them up for sale or remux on fiverr or gumroad, there is always a way to make something custom.

As I’ve tried to explain the video (do let me know if I need to clarify anything) applying layer masks using the shapes inside of keynote is incredibly easy but I might have gone a little fast (two coffees in today already!) but it’s literally just clicking both the shape and the image you want to ‘blend’ together with the shape on the top becoming the mask — this opens up so many ways to be creative!

I think I got inspired by a newsletter I saw, maybe it was the bbc website and one of those story views you get where they customise everything but it made me want to make graphics and layouts that really stand out and tell a story, when I hit the road I want everything to be custom and tell a story.

Bit like this dragon woods one, so simple but so stand out, I love the notion of augmenting a space or places reality with it and it’s also a good rule of thumb to remember to run these applications through a program like https://imageoptim.com/mac — it’s a free app but it makes your images much smaller without any quality issues, it’s fantastic.

I’ve made a little keynote pack and put it on gumroad if you want to dive straight in and you can download keynote for free (yes, apple made it free!) — https://www.apple.com/uk/keynote — best thing is you can collaborate on them and also do basic animations and export them as movies/gifs and convert them with a tool like gif brewery 3

I hope you grab a copy of keynote, throw me $3 for my existing pack of nearly 30 images and symbols ready to be played with — trust me if you want to have a meditative/creative moment and want to make some really abstract images you’ll have a lot of fun with this!
