Does she know she is dreaming?
The difficult thing about being a young child is that communication is hard as sometimes, parents just don't understand. I am sure that our daughter has many questions that she would like clarified by us but, she just can't ask in the right way. I have questions for her too, and I am equally limited.
One question I would love to ask and have answered by her is: What do you dream about?
The other night, she woke up and shouted 'Vauva!' (Baby!) and went back to sleep. This raises a question in me that I may never have answered. Does a baby realise she is dreaming?
I think about this and I can't imagine that she realises that the images she sees in her sleep aren't real. After all, I have dreams that feel very real indeed and even as I wake from them, the feeling of reality remains until the brain processes that it was a dream and dismisses it away.
Like my own dreams, I assume that hers are stimulated by her environment, the day to day activities that she does and things like her doll (Baby) which she plays with often. Sometimes she sings songs and sometimes she cries in her sleep too. But also like me, I assume that they are somewhat changed from reality, mixed, blurred and a place where fantastical things can happen.
When she wakes up and what was just there a moment ago has been replaced by the darkness of her room, is she freaked out, does she question it, does it feel like magic? Perhaps to her, without the explanation of what a dream or what reality is, she just accepts the dreamworld as part of reality. What if this is part of the reason kids are so creative.
Maybe because children cannot differentiate between awake and dreamworld, the things that pass-by whilst asleep, become sources of inspiration while awake. They are able to take what they have experienced dreaming as possible, rather immediately dismissing it as a dream.
I wonder if we should tell children they are dreaming at all? Perhaps it would be great if they never learned about dreams and instead used them as a source of inspiration. I am sure they would work it out but, maybe if the dreams were alive just a little bit longer, they could discover the incredible.
What do you think? Do you think a baby knows she is dreaming?

The video is of my daughter playing one of her favourite games. I filmed it a couple weeks ago and she has pretty much 'outgrown' it. It has become too easy for her so I have to keep finding new ways to make it harder but she is outsmarting me. She is awesome.

I feel like they’re too little know know that they’re dreaming maybe ? Until they get around 5-6 years old. My 4 month old song cries in his sleep all the time like he’s scared of something
Mine is 16 months old and she talks somewhat already, today, she put together her first sentence of 3 words which was pretty cool. If only I spoke Finnish :D
Yeah, I don't imagine that they realise they are dreaming so how does it feel to have a nightmare and wake up in the dark?
Small babies often cry in their sleep, ours generally only when her allergies are acting up and she is in pain. The last few night she has been waking up in the middle hours and playing with her toys, singing and talking for a few minutes before going back to sleep.
How is motherhood going?
That is so cute !! What does she say ? :D by the time she’s a little older she’s gonna day “why” for everything
I usually keep a nightlight on for the baby since I have realized he cries more in the dark when he wakes up . Literally their laungugebis crying for communication .
Motherhood is tough being alone with a baby currently since my husband is still overseas but it’s a journey that I am blessed to have .
Today, it was, 'This is Mama' in regards to a book she was reading and a character in it. She has a very large spoken vocabulary already considering her age and it is generally in both Finnish and English.
Yes, I can imagine it is hard to be alone with a baby, I hope that you have some backup sometimes. For us, it has only been in the last month that someone else has been able to take her for a few hours.
Well my dear friend @tarazkp. Even when I am one of those rare specimens with a good, almost eidetic, long time memory holding. I'm afraid, I can't go as far as to remember how I felt the dreams when I was a so young child. Well, at least as to tell you with total assurance and authority. So we will both remain with the doubt. Hahahaha
On other hand, I'm very glad that I did watch your video. And I have to tell you, that you seems to have a gorgeous family. It is wonderful to see you chose to play such great and mindful games with your little child. In my opinion, those are actually the ones more useful for her cognitive development. And I like to watch she is already growing like an authentic bilingual kid who clearly understand pretty well english and finnish languages.
And last but not least. Even when I am such a Macho Man. I will shamelessly tell you that you are a handsome boy whose physical condition clearly shows your well known practice and discipline in everything you do. We all can see now, that your visits to the gym and your usual workout has made marvels on you my dear friend. :)
¡Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!
She really is developing much faster than we thought she would and according to our friends and family with kids, fast in general. Today she not only completed her first sentence, she counted to five. Yes, she probably doesn't understand it but she does count it on her fingers so it is a decent start.
She is really clever which makes me wonder if I am the father but, she is so smart I will claim her anyway :D
I could lose a couple pounds.. a new years resolution perhaps ;)
Hopefully you enjoyed some good food and a glass of wine or a beer today.
Haha, she already has claimed you as her true blood's father. Because she can feel it in the guts and now that she can count till five, she knows this way better than you do. :)
Well, I couldn't see where you have stored those extra pounds you wanna lose. But if it is from the biceps I can understand. :p
Yeah mate, as always, thanks to you I could afford a nice meal today. Nothing fancy beyond the usual frugal one which I'm already used to. But the glass of wine or beer hopefully will have to wait till tomorrow or the 31/12. Since all the liqueur stores around here suddenly were closed a week before christmas day. Because with the terrible current economic inflation over here, each one of these greedy merchants were abusing and rising arbitrarily the prices of the products without control until the authorities had to intervene to put order.
Therefore, practically each one of them opted to close and not opening their stores to avoid being forced to lower the prices of the merchandise at fair prices.
(Yep mate, this is the sad reality we are living here at the moment in my neck of the woods.)
So, since I am such a sweet guy. If I am lucky enough to find a liqueur store open on these next days, prolly I'll purchase a nice bottle of Frangelico to celebrate with myself in my usual soliloquy the arrival of the New Year 2018. :)
@tarazkp Dreams are powerful! They just feel so real that we always fall for it. I've always wondered if reality is just a dream as well. I mean every day I wake up I realize that everything I saw was just a dream, yet for some reason I'm still unable to realize it the moment it takes place. That raises an unanswered question: how could we know if reality was just a dream? I think we couldn't!
Happy holidays!
Yes, I agree. When it comes to what 'reality' is, there is very little evidence to say that it is a reality at all. But, that is another post ;)
My niece had quite awfull nightmares. I guess I wonder do we maybe rly bring some stuff with us? :) What is horrible to a baby that can't even talk? Maybe they only dream of sensations and feelings? What can a brain of a child who can't even understand some of the basic things put together?
My cats dream too....
....makes me wanna get in their heads lol
Yes, it is a little bit of a worry really. Maybe is is a world full of monsters...
Our dog dreams, but dogs are simpler than cats. He runs in his sleep, barks and chews stuff. Sometimes he digs also.
she is so cute !... ..the best thing about childhood is that there is no strees , worries or care about the world...and she is in that state of mind....
wish I were a child again and relive those childhood days ;)
