Block and Weights
See what I did there with the title? Hilarious.
I am pretty serious a lot of the time on Steemit and I think I should occasionally have a little bit of fun too or at least, talk about something other than a dystopian future or murder people in fiction. So, let's talk about how my body is wasting away and turning into a blob. In the dystopian future, I will likely want to be gruesomely murdered for not having taken better care of myself.
Actually, considering I am almost 40, sleep a few hours a night, eat cereal for dinner, hardly exercise, drink too much coffee, have asthma, an IBD, thyroid issues and need glasses.... I am doing pretty well all up.
Once upon a time, long, long ago I was in hospital and weighed 47 kilograms. I am not tall but, that was pretty light. Now, I am about 86 kilos. I would like to be around 72 or rather, look like I am around 72. I am pretty solid, even when not carrying a few extra Christmas kilos...from 2015. and 16 and 17.
Anyway... I can still carry my own weight (just) and can even get it off the ground from time to time. The video is from the Summer but I tested it the other day when I happened to stumble into the gym and I can still get that height at least. In the video it is 120 cm (47 inches) and my highest is 135 cm (53 inches). It is scary for me as the boxes don't go that high easily and they are pretty wobbly.
So, that is the Block. Here is the Weights.
I haven't benched in a while and I don't really like benchpress at all but, occasionally I like to see what I can do and spend a few weeks building up a bit. This is 120 kilos (260 pounds) in the picture including the bar and my absolute max so far for a couple reps has been 135 kilos ( just under 300 pounds). I am pretty happy with it considering how little I care.
In the last couple years, I have stopped doing heavy weights on most things except squats and deadlifts and have instead focused on movements using body weight only, or mostly. In 2016, I also started doing a little bit of minimal shoe running but it is hard to keep up with such long and cold winters. It definitely made my endurance better and my back feel great whilst running though. Before, I had chronic shin splints every time I ran so chose not to more than chose to but in the Vibrams, the position changes and I didn't really get pains at all then.
I think these days especially, we take our bodies for granted and rarely move as much, as often, as dynamically or broadly enough to keep ourselves functioning well. Our physical health has a massive impact on our mental and emotional health too and neglecting it is a recipe for disaster. It really doesn't take too much effort to get moving a little more and feeling a lot better.
It also doesn't take too much effort to get out of shape and feeling blah as I feel at the moment. I have to start moving more. There are too many adventures waiting ahead to be be too out of shape or ill to do them.
How about you guys, move a lot or do you think you should move a little more?

I didn't want to show the warmup. :P
That box jump in the video is seriously impressive. They scare me for some reason, maybe the idea of face planting of worse lol...
47kg is sersiouly light, I got to a similar wight when in hospital and was just skin and bones. I think it puts into prespective the need to carry some weight.
As for the moving thing, we try to gym it 5-6 mornings a week and walk/hike on the off days. The silly season has seen us be a bit lax on this but mainly due to work commitments not lack of trying. We have still managed 3-4 times a week.
We feel less lethargic after a workout then if we sleep in. Its a great way to start the day, plus I steemit on the walk to the gym on the treadmill and on the way home, so multitasking all the way!
What is this... 'sleep in' you speak of? ;)
I was able to go more before my wife started studying again but someone always has to look after the little one. Exercising is about one of the best things someone can do for themselves and it makes me wonder why it is one of the last they are willing to try. It is a keystone habit and other benefits radiate from it.
haha, I forgot I talk to you mainly at 2am onwards lol.. I saw you mention 24 hour gyms above, our gym is 24 hours, as are most of the newer ones in Australia, they are only staffed during specific hours but we prefer to go when its quieter and no staff on.
It is funny how we don't do then things we know we would benefit from. Creatures of habit, sadly its not generally the good habits that win over without a lot more hard work and consistency. Having children and changing circumstances can put a hold on make certain things more challenging, maybe you just need an exercise routine that you can do with your little one? A Daddy & Daughter Workout.
Its quite a challenge nowadays to do a lot of exercise when we have a busy life. For me, even more because i hate going to gym and the weather outside is not very inviting for a run. My advive try to sleep some more hours at night, forget cereal for dinner (its for breakfast), moderate coffee, not quite sure about asthama, IBD and thyroid...glasses are more than fine...reading your description in the text you look like a mess and i was expecting to see a old super fat with bad appearance guy in the video and then i get a nice suprise! You look good and text is clearly exaggerating ;) Nevertheless, the better we take care of our health, the less surprises we will have in the future ;) It was a good reading ;)
If my wife cooked more often I wouldn't have to eat cereal ;) Are you saying this 4am cup of coffee is not healthy?
For me, it has mostly been laziness (and steemit) lately. I would love it if the gym was 24 hours as I would be able to go after my daughter goes to bed. I spend the evening with her as I work a lot during the days.
But, I can definitely find some more time somewhere.
Your first post you have spent all this time working on is going to be epic. ;)
haha, if the girl doesn't cook, than the man must do it :P Just arrived from the club one hour ago, and not sleepy, so steemit and facebook games for a little. I'm one of the few that aren't much into coffee ;)
Its hard to get motivated daily, i have the same problem and steemit is also taking me some time, but i try to keep it to a minimum of 1-2h a day in the computer.
I tried gym, but its not for me, i'm more of an outside girl.
haha, well the good news, is that i already studied markdown, a bit of html and floating images right and left, and you know what they say...better late than never ;) Forget to tell that my biggest flaw is being perfectionist ;)
Having kids make me move more especially being the youngest as a toddler. And my full time job stressed me a lot nowadays so I think I get more than sufficient amount of exercise in my activities of daily living. Moderation is the key with balanced diet and positive outlook in life. You do not look bad in the video at all but I understand your desire to lose some pounds.
Yes, the kids burn some calories but not enough for me, It is not just the softness in weight, it is the general feeling. I have never been very fat but even now I am uncomfortable.
I have been trying my best to battle staying awake all night as sleep is really important for us, I think you need more sleep too and a moderate exercise, you have a great physical apprearance from the looks of things and what you have written, taking coffee is great but not too much. You can always try out some other foods that makes people healthy but yeah thanks for sharing a little of your activities with us.
@tarazkp nicely done at the boxjumps. Exercising and dieting are major challenges most especially if work takes up most of the time, but when i do decide to move.I go full throttle with battle rope exercise,i,prefer bodyweight exercises, jump roping and some boxing drills.
we have to keep our body fit.....
hope you fine always . keep fighting
I hear ya. I'm 35....two years ago I was in the best shape of my life. Exercising 5-7 times a week. Things changed....and I got out of the routine....and have since gained 30lbs. Now I'm getting back into a harder exercise routine. It's so easy to get out of a good habit.
