Using Dried Leave As Chicken Coop Bedding?

in #dtube5 years ago

I started noticing that the flies were getting bad in the chicken coop, so I figured it was time to clean house. However, since our goal is sustainability, I didn't want to have to run out to Tractor Supply to buy several pre-packaged bales of pine shavings. Instead, I decided to try something a bit different. I've had this pile of bagged up dried leaves laying around the house every since I collected them this past spring, so I thought I'd find out if they make an effective chicken coop bedding. They are sustainable and FREE, so if they work, then it will be awesome!

This is a great way to keep down costs. Important info! So will straw, hay, and some shredded paper. For the latter, I use my kids' scribbles that aren't keepers. Put like 12 inches of this in and you are using the deep litter method.
