JEOL 4000 EX 400kV Transmission Electron Microscope Specimen Holder Loading Mechanism.
This was the most massive Transmission Electron Microscope I have ever touched. Unfortunately, my job was to scrap it. The thing was over 10 feet tall, and about 20 feet deep, the size of a small bus. lenses the size of pizzas! Made sometime in the 80s, it was designed to be a very high resolution TEM. What you are seeing here is the pistol revolver style specimen holder...holder. Ha! Each "Bullet" holds one 3mm sample grid. The 3mm sample grids are industry standard, if you are not familiar. As you can see in the video, there is a hand operated mechanism that extracts the bullet. Another dial moves it into the chamber. I will be writing a entire blog piece on this MASSIVE TEM in the future. This is just a teaser. Sorry about noise in video, that was a coworker wrenching on something in the back.
