[EP154] - Adventures in solar!
Hi everyone!
Hope you're all well!
As a means to help contribute positively to our climate crisis, I've been investigating solar for quite a while. We're in a bit of an interesting situation in that we can't put solar on our roof, something to do with the foundations of the house not supporting the weight.. which has led me to investigate alternative solar solutions... and through my investigations I found some fairly significant drawbacks to solar.
One drawback was that the data seemed to suggest that people in my area didn't really care about solar, however Zillow (the massive American real estate site) has released details that on average, houses with solar sell for $23K higher than comparable properties. This means you can get cheaper energy, and make the investment back at sale time.
A more worrying drawback for me was solar panels tend to last about 30 years... and then would fill up our landfills with toxic material. Fortunately, the Veolia group has opened a plant in France that can recycle solar panels and get 95% of the raw materials back.
This is a huge relief for me... the advances in solar, just in the time I've been researching has been amazing! We went from a concrete apartment to a farm... where our electricity bill has risen from $30 a month to $300 a month. I've gotten it down to $90ish a month now, but I'm still keen to reduce our footprint.
Thanks for watching!
