Depending on the amount you have to proove where you got you gold.
Also the US government collected all Gold Dollars at some point if i remember correctly.
If that's true, that's a silly law. I wish we lived in a world where each individual truly owned what he owned and didn't have to pay dues and check in with a higher authority. And yes the government did make it illegal for people to own gold back in the day. I'm skeptical as to how many people actually turned theirs in.
