I think compassion could have been used in place of violence and torture to "help" this man with whatever problems he is facing in his life that made him feel he needed to steal to keep on keeping on. Governement and its programs designed to help are what create these problems not solve them. We have been "solving" these problems with government for decades now with no pregress.
